On Saturday 7 pm GMT, [livejournal.com profile] seascribe and I are going to meet up on Skype to watch either a couple of due South episodes, or the Steve McQueen movie Bullitt. We haven't quite decided yet. And I know the latter isn't C6D or anything, but I do consider it due South-related anyway, since Ray K canonically had a thing for Steve McQueen. : )

Do join us if you want! My Skype-id is luzulae.

Oooh! I'd love to join in. You can actually watch a movie on Skype? Could someone talk me through it?

And I wrote a really fun scene in an upcoming fic with Fraser and RayK playing chess, and Ray flashing on Faye Donohue, which would make him Steve McQueen. (Stop fondling your bishop, Fraser!) I think SM is not the best looking man in the world, but DAMN his eyes are blue! I can see why Ray likes him...

And I've just ordered the movie from Amazon... even if we don't watch it Sunday, we could do it another time, yes?

My husband and I recently watched The Magnificent Seven (which has McQueen & also other famous people), in order to complete the set of The Seven Samurai, The Magnificent Seven, and Tampopo, all retellings of the same story. I'm pretty sure it's the first time I've actually seen him in anything...I've watched movies from his era, but not usually in his genres.

Oh, holy mother of god, that's an AWESOME film. I mean, come on... when they come over the horizon?

I so want an excuse to write a fic with THOSE guys.

Why do you need an excuse? :)

(Here, if you want a pseudo-prompt: most of the guys recruited are people who knew...Chris? (Yul Brynner's character) from some previous context. The exceptions being Steve McQueen's character (if I'm mapping the actors correctly), who he meets in the opening scene with the hearse-driving, and the Kid. And yet, it's McQueen's character who instantly and through the whole thing becomes his right-hand man and closest thing to a confidant or partner -- *not* any of these guys he has existing relationships with. And we don't really see how or why that happens. But there they go riding off into the sunset together at the end. What's up with that? :) )

Well, that's just a tragedy. I don't have time to redress the situation, but believe me, it's on my hit list.

Awesome idea! I hope to participate! And I do think that Steve McQueen qualifies as C6D, for Ray's sake. Of course I have all the dS discs, and I'm getting Bullitt from my local library.

And we have to watch the Thomas Crown Affair (hang on, my brain's really not working today, is that what it's called?) If only for the chess. (Sorry, we are big chess nerds in our house. Seriously, when I was a girl I wanted to marry Gary Kasparov, and kill Kasporov horribly, to prove my eternal devotion.) My son once placed third in the national divisions for his age range. (He was nine, the kids who beat him had a LOT of money, one of them went to a private school that specialised in chess, one had an international master as his private tutor. My son just read a lot of books, and played chess with me and his step Dad.) I always remember the look on his face when he was nine, and beat an international master. (I remember the look on the guy's face as well. Turns out he did know one word in English... 'fuck.')

Yays for BG's son!

And LOL that "turns out he did know one word in English...."

I meant to say... I wanted to marry Kasporov, and kill KARPOV! (To any KGB trolling the forums, I have repented my murderous intent.)

Shite and onions, I really am dyslexic today.

Well, that clears that up! I was trying to twist my brain around the original wording. Ouch.

Absolutely and truly the most incoherent day I've had in yonks.

Damn red wine. I hadn't even started when I wrote the above!

And... here, in case you're interested, is Gary Kasparov as he looks now. It is unfeasible that the man is still sexy, even while being beaten up by the cops, grey haired, and getting on in years. I've fancied him for what... three decades now? You think he'd have the decency to just STOP being sex on a stick.

I want to start a GK is the boss thread... http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/garry-kasparov-arrested-beaten-pussy-riot-protest-363687

Actually... he's not getting that much on in years. It's just that on telly in the UK a man of his age with grey hair would dye it, or never ever be seen again. But you do have to admit, he's bloody stonking.

He's an arrogant ass,but then if you were as clever as him it would be hard to resist the temptation. Besides which, politically, he's right. It's hard not to come across as anything less than arrogant when you know you're right. Hummm...women's rights... let's have them. No! Hey, fuck you. GK, you arrogant asshole. Azerbaijan, freedom from oppressive regime, GK, you arrogant asshole! Fuck off, I'm right.,

Okay. I've only had to glasses of wine. The rest is going in the freezer so I can cook Italian tomorrow! I shall stop hijacking this lovey, non chess related thread. (I am such a tragic nerd. Apologies to all concerned.)

My "GMT brain" it is not working. Would somebody jump in here with the answer to "at 7 PM GMT what time will the Skype watch be in 'Chicago time' "?

I believe the answer is 1 pm, if I'm remembering how far off Chicago is from me, but the internet will tell you for sure.

Gah! Here's what I got when I looked up "how to calculate GMT for Chicago" :

Find the number of longitude lines between you and the Prime Meridian in Greenwich, England. Remember when you were in school learning geography, and looking at the maps with those lines running north and south, from pole to pole? Those are longitude lines and they are used in calculating coordinates for travel and also for calculating time, relative to the Prime Meridian. Count the number of north/south longitude lines between you and the Prime Meridian. Between the Prime Meridian in England, and Chicago, Illinois, there are six longitude, or meridian lines. Determine if you're east or west of the Prime Meridian.
Look at the world map again. If you're west of the Prime Meridian, your GMT will be ahead of, or minus, the time at the Prime Meridian. If you are east, your time will be after, or plus, GMT. Put the minus or plus sign in front of the number you found from the previous step and that's your GMT.

TYK...now I just need to know what city to compare against Chicago (the calculator at that URL asks between Chicago and what city I want to compare times).

I'm sure Fraser would do it the way that made me go Gah.

I am a Mountie! I can do this!

And it turns out Desiree was right : 7 PM GMT is 1 PM near the lake they call Michigan.

Evening local time would have worked for me...I'm not sure yet about whether I can make it for the afternoon. Do you know yet if you'll be starting with dS eps or with Bullitt?

Date: 2012-12-06 11:08 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ride-4ever.livejournal.com
Understood. I wasn't angling for a change, just making a statement. If it happens you start with dS eps I'll try to "jump in wherever". I got the Bullitt DVD from my local library, so I am primed to watch that if it's part of our viewing, but I'd try to work it out for being in on the beginning movie-wise.

I wasn't able to be online for Skype this time, but I did do a Bullitt rewatch on my own last weekend in case there's any subsequent discussion about it....
