I started a private Facebook group called “Due South Duet: Fraser/Kowalski Slash” to see if that’s something F/K fans might need at this juncture. It's only been running for a couple of weeks, but it looks pretty promising, with people arriving from Tumblr and from the public dS group on FB, telling me that a private place where it's easy to have conversations is very much needed in this fandom. I hope I can reach some more people here: the more old and new F/K fans we can gather to one place, the more likely it is that we can have ourselves an active, inspiring and helpful community. I really wish it could happen on a non-commercial platform such as DW, but Facebook, even with all its faults, just happens to work better right now.*

*About Facebook and fandom: In my experience (mostly from the Starsky & Hutch fandom), FB is currently one of the best platforms for fan communities to thrive - not perfect, but very good: many people already have an account there, one can share all kinds of content without being tech-savvy, and daily participation is fun and easy even with mobile devices. The groups enable lengthy in-depth discussions as well as spur-of-the-moment frivolity - very much like old time LJ. If you’re worried about privacy: not even your FB friends can see if you’re a member of a private group or see what you say there (unless, of course, your friends are members of the same group). Also, private groups can never be switched to public, not even by the admins. And of course, it's always possible to create an account on FB just for fannish purposes and not use your real name. That's what I and many others have done.

Hi DS_Noticeboard!

I want to plug a new due South community--

ds_ficminers. The goal is to find due South fanfic that isn't on an Archive of Our Own. Livejournal has proved to have lots of fics in the backlogged communities, and there are still a lot of due South websites in existence on the rest of the internet--and there's a staggering amount of fic that has simply never been posted to AO3.

All pairings (and no pairings!) are welcome, as are all ratings. This is a community that is aimed at adults, so discretion is advised, and if you feel squirmy about posting something from

stop_drop_porn where minors can see it, you can always lock it to members-only.

I should emphasize that this is not primarily a recs community. By which I mean: this is not a community where every fic and every entry has to be A Great Fic. The primary purpose is to dig up fic that otherwise might disappear; whether it's "good" or not, beyond that, is subjective, and not for this community to decide. The main criteria here is whether or not something is already easily accessible on AO3. As long as it is not on AO3, and as long as it is publicly accessible on the interwebs, it's fair game for posting to

ds_ficminers--the only other rule is that it has to be due South.

That said, you can absolutely make posts recommending a fic, as long as it meets the above criteria. (My very first post is, technically, a rec!) Just remember that recommendations are not the heart and soul of this community.

Authors who are not comfortable with their old work/sites being posted here may contact me. I want to respect the wishes of authors, here, and I know that what one writes twenty years ago is not going to be the thing one wants to read (or perhaps have read) twenty years later.

Hey everyone, after our discussion on comms I contacted both mods and they asked me to find some people more involved currently in the fandom to take over. I’d do it if we absolutely can’t find anyone else, but would like to ask all of you first. The comm is set up, so there’s not really a lot of work involved I think, it should run by itself.

Calling for Pinch Hitters!

It's pinch hitter time! All volunteers are welcome -- you do not have to be signed up for dSSS to pinch hit -- if you can pinch hit to write fic, make fanart, podfic, or vid, please volunteer to help!

A pinch hitter is someone who steps in to fulfill a request if one of the participants has to drop out. Hopefully everyone will be able to turn in their assignments as planned, but if RL emergencies arise, that’s when the mods will bring in a pinch hitter. This can happen at any time, including the last minute, which means sometimes pinch hitters have to work to a very short deadline.

To volunteer to pinch hit, please comment to the related ds_ssdiscussion post on Dreamwidth with the following information:

Your AO3/Tumblr handle, if you are commenting anonymously
Email address or other best way to contact you
Format(s) you can offer (fic, art, vid, podfic)
Characters and pairings you can offer
Restrictions (things you aren't comfortable offering)

If you don’t want to post your email address publicly, drop the mods a line at dsss.admin at gmail dot com so that we know how to reach you if we need your volunteer help.

The general dSSS submission deadline is Saturday, December 16 at 11:59PM CST. Pinch hitters will be allowed a December 22 deadline, but we want everyone to aim for the 16th. If you have any questions or concerns, please email your friendly neighborhood mods at dsss.admin at gmail dot com and we'll do everything we can to help you out.

There is a new multifandom comm, the What if AU. Their first challenge is the The gang's all here"/"No-one dies AU" challenge.

The rules are pretty relaxed (no minimum word counts, no deadlines).

So if you've been wanting to AU Gardino or Irene back to life -- or, heck, dead!Bob and dead!Caroline Fraser -- have at it. Or maybe you're in a c6d mood, so why not resurrect Joe Dick -- or make it so he never died in the first place?
Note: I have nothing to do with the comm, I just noticed it and thought the challenge might appeal to some folks here.

Throughout the month of February, Both Sides of the Border is hosting a review hunt. Basically, it boils down to: Review stories, get points, maybe win an Amazon gift card for $15 or $5. ride_4ever already said, there's a new forum for dS/C6D/Twin Peaks. But beyond the fact that it's a safe, all inclusive, non-discriminatory space, here are a few more reasons to come join us there:

Attachments - Need to host a file and share it with your fellow fen, but don't have your own webspace? Use ours! The forum has attachments enabled for most kinds of files, and the file sizes allowed are pretty massive. So, if you wanna share that 2000 page document, you can. If you want to just stick it on the forum as backup, you can. Want to share that fanmix? Do the thing. Want to post whole giant screencap packs zipped without having to worry about the security of your hosting site? Bring them.

Requestable Subforums - Are you into a niche C6D fandom and want an internet home for it? Come ask for a subforum! Believe me, Ride and I are here to serve; this forum's for you. Are you an incredibly prolific author or fanworker and want your own subforum? That's absolutely do-able. Do you have a community elsewhere you want to either back up or promote? Come on over.

Private Messaging and Attachments - Not only can you attach to posts, but attachments in private messages are enabled, as well as multiple recipients. Want to send someone a file to beta? Share a song? You can do all of that through PMs.

Ad free and already paid - Ride and I already covered the bills for two years. So, no ads. Fan owned. Fan run. No commercial interests at all.

These are just some of the things. In the future, we're also looking into offering webspace or blogspace if people want it. We're here for you, we're here to serve. So, if you haven't joined yet, please feel free to do so. We'd be hella happy to have you. <3

2016 had more than the usual share of stresses and losses, and 2017 is already garnering its share. LiveJournal moved servers to Russia, and the fandom's scattered across several social media platforms, so we (

sl_walker and I) decided to make an all-inclusive, non-discriminatory forum for due South, C6D and Twin Peaks, with an emphasis on the privacy and safety of everyone who joins.

We call this forum Both Sides of the Border. It's our gift to fandom, and to you, and we hope you join us there.
