I have a couple of announcements regarding tags. First, picspam now has its own tag! I'm retagging screencap resources as picspam so they'll be easier to find -- and therefore easier to make art with!

Also, here's the UPDATED guide to tagging, if you have any questions about how to tag your posts.

Thanks! :D

I woke up today to an email asking me to change the encoding settings on a Due South community in order to allow someone to use [livejournal.com profile] ljarchive to back it up. I said, huh? And then learned about the LJ layoffs, and while I don't believe LJ is actually in mortal peril, I do believe strongly in data backup. Especially wrt making sure our data/stories/art/fandom history/personal journals/etc. will be safe for the future.

If you moderate ANY community or your journal is more than two years old, I recommend going to the following link and checking your encoding settings.

1. Go to: Encoding Options

2. Switch user to whichever journal/community you want to check.

3. Look at the "Auto-convert older entries from" box. If it says "None", you need select "Western European (Windows)" from the pull-down menu in order for LJ Archive to be able to backup your journal or comm.

4. Save and repeat for your other journals/comms.

I have done this for: [livejournal.com profile] ds_flashfiction, [livejournal.com profile] ds_noticeboard, [livejournal.com profile] ds_recfinders, [livejournal.com profile] ds_workshop, and [livejournal.com profile] batfic (which I apparently still have modly powers over, huh). I'm also making backups of ds flashfic and the noticeboard through today.

*** IF YOU MOD AN OLD, CLOSED, or "DEAD"-but-still-visited community -- such as [livejournal.com profile] ds_recs or [livejournal.com profile] ds_discourse -- PLEASE MAKE THIS CHANGE so we can preserve the community content. ***

THANK YOU!

(If you have no idea what I'm talking about, more info on backing up LJ journals and communities can be found here and here.)

Hi, all! It's been some time since the last reminder, so I'm posting again to request that y'all always tag your posts to [livejournal.com profile] ds_noticeboard. This is both a courtesy to your fellow fen and a great means to ease searches for fannish stuff by genre and fic by pairing.

I give the community's posts a glance-though every few days, and if you post untagged fic and I can't figure out from your header what the pairing is -- or if it's gen -- then I'll mark it "oblique header". Remember, the old FK tag grew too large for LJ's 1000 entry per tag cut-off, so use fic: FK.2008, please. Come New Year's, we'll start another tag for next year. :D

As always, if you aren't sure what to tag your post, just ask. Many thanks! :D

Dear DS Fen,

This makes me CRY. I bet it makes the baby Fraser cry, too. [edit: the page was almost completely bare when I posted this.]

Surely someone -- or a team of several someones -- can put our fandom on the fanlore.org map. There's even a handy "Shortcuts for Editors" section in the sidebar now to help with new page creation. Remember that fanlore.org isn't just about the shows/films/books/etc. we love. It's about us. It's about the infrastructure of our fandom and what happens in it. It's our history.

Don't you want the DS page to link to more subpages besides The Ray Wars (which is only a blank stub, but still! [edit: again, when I posted, this was an empty template. But there's progress already!])? Who are we? What have we done? What are the most memorable challenges we've run? What are the standout DS cons? What are the seminal DS vids? Who are the go-to reccers? Who pioneered DS podfic? This is only the tip of the proverbial iceberg, folks. Please help write DS fandom history!

I'm happy to answer what questions I can -- just ask! And if anyone wants to help other fen create their own user pages, that would be awesome. (I know my own is in desperate need of improvement; suggestions are welcome! :P)

Thanks!

Hey all! I have a little admin project I'd like to get some help with. There have been scads of new DS communities created in the past year, and it's definitely time I revised the list of fandom resources (linked in the sidebar) to be the most help to new and old fen alike. :D

What I need is a complete and accurate list of ALL ACTIVE DUE SOUTH COMMUNITIES on LJ.

What I mean by "active": Please ignore dead communities. BUT, say there's a community closed to new posts, like [livejournal.com profile] ds_recs, that continues to be referenced/linked to on a fairly regular basis. Please DO list it along with all active DS communities.

If any of you have some free time on your hands, it would be fantastic if you could help! (Don't worry about formatting for LJ -- plain text is fine.) Also, you may want to refresh the comments before you post so that you're not needlessly duplicating names.

Thank you!! :)

Hi, all! We have a new noticeboard posting guideline to announce, so please read this.

Since [livejournal.com profile] ds_noticeboard's inception, we've asked that people not post announcements here for stories written for [livejournal.com profile] ds_flashfiction because so many of us watch both communities. Now that [livejournal.com profile] ds_snippets has grown so large, we're extending this policy to it, too. So from now on, please don't announce flashfics or snippets from either of those comms on [livejournal.com profile] ds_noticeboard.

To compensate, and to make sure that everyone's aware of all new fic, the mods of [livejournal.com profile] ds_snippets and [livejournal.com profile] ds_flashfiction are going to post here with weekly roundups of snippets and flashfics. We hope this will mean more readers for fic and fewer double-up announcements.

As always, when you enjoy a story, please take the time to feedback the author. :)

Finally, WELCOME to all the new people coming into DS fandom! You may not know about all our bright and shiny communities, of which there are lots, so please explore at will, and if you have any questions, just ask.

Thanks! :)

Guess what! We have outgrown the fic: fk tag! LJ only lets skip=1000 for any given tag in a community, and our FK fic has exceeded that limit -- woohoo! So, we have some new tags! First, fic: fk.2008. Up until the end of this year, please tag your FK fic with this tag.

As of this moment, all other FK stories are tagged with the new fic: fk.2007 tag. Yes, this is incorrect. I'll get the earlier stories changed to fic: fk.pre-2007 as soon as possible. (Help would be very much appreciated.)

A few months back, there was interest in adding author/artist tags to the community. If we do them, they would look like: a: username and would allow people to find all the (creative-work) posts you've made to the community (i.e. we'd use this tag only for fic, art, podfic, and vid announcements but not for other types of posts).

So now I want to make sure the majority of us are on board with this, okay? Okay, so please vote and then we'll go from there. Thank you!! :D

[Poll #1127667]
Please note: this poll will stay open until Monday night.

Below is an updated list of all the tags in use here on DS Noticeboard and what they include. I've tried to impose some logic on them, therefore MANY tags have been renamed!

As always, thank you for tagging your posts! If you have any questions, please just ask. :D

The Big Tag List )

Hey everybody! First, I want to thank all of you for continuing to tag your posts -- it's a great help toward keeping things organized. I've been slowly going through the fandom news tag and narrowing it down to smaller categories. As a result, let me introduce three new tags:

1. community pimping. This is for all those wonderful "here's our new comm, come check us out" posts.

2. cons. Seattle Con, MJ, Con.txt, etc.

3. screenings & airings. This is for all your broadcast/filmfest airing announcements, such as, "Slings & Arrows will be on BBC2 at 9pm Thursday" or "Normal will be showing at TIFF at 7pm on the 18th" posts. (Please note: this is very different from the media tag, which is mainly for sharing print interviews, video interviews unavailable from other sources, fanmix samplers, etc.)

Yay tags! I hope these will prove useful. As always, if you have any questions about tag use, just comment or email me. :D

Now here's where I ask for...HELP! I need some volunteers to begin sorting the slash other tag into pairings. I think the divisions are going to be KV, FKV, Fraser/other m, RayK/other m, and Turnbull slash. Sound like something you can help with? Please comment below so we can coordinate. Thank you! :D

Hey all! First, thanks to everyone who has been tagging their own posts. It makes my daily tagging drive-bys much, much easier!

There are a few new tags that I want to introduce:
fandom chats - because we're having enough of them these days that a single tag makes sense.
freecycle - is for giving away/selling fannish stuff like old DVDs/videos, zines, etc.
media - is for things like pointing everyone to actor interviews, posting DS and HCL soundbites, DS music mixes, etc. It is for sharing SAMPLES only, not complete copyrighted works.
meta - was left off the initial tag list. *woe* Linking meta here on the Noticeboard is totally welcome! Meta is awesome! \o/

And a couple of clarifications: challenges is for challenge news and announcements only. If you post a fic announcement, just tag by pairing/genre. (If I can't figure out what the pairing/genre is, it'll be marked "oblique header".)

Now, here's where I'd like to request some help. I need some people to help skim through a couple of tags and suggest needed additions.

First: fandom news. On the first pass, this was largely a catch-all tag -- like a big box of miscellaneous stuff to sort through later. Now we need to figure out what useful tags can be applied so we can remove some things from the box and put them in little boxes.

Also, perhaps we should think about the difference between "fandom news" as "news relating to PG, CKR, DS-as-a-show" and "news relating to DS Fandom". Maybe they need separate tags?

Second: slash other. Please help me put together a list of pairing tags to break this into. Tentatively, I'm thinking:

Ray/Ray
Turnbull slash
Fraser/other male (not a Ray)
RayK/other male (not Ray or Fraser)
RayV/other male (not Ray or Fraser)

But I haven't skimmed through the slash other tag yet, so I don't know what else is common enough to need its own box.

Also, if anyone wants to jump ahead and do a pairing breakdown on Het and Femslash, you would totally be my hero! ♥

Can you help? Please drop a note in the comments to let me know!

Thank you all SO much!!! ♥

Hey everybody! I wanted to let you know that the Noticeboard Tagging Project is under way! We'll be tagging every entry posted from the very beginning of this community until the end of Labor Day weekend with the new set of tags.

From here on out, please tag ALL your [livejournal.com profile] ds_noticeboard posts!

A second round of tagging will further sort genres according to pairing and author.

The other bit of news is that the noticeboard has a new layout, complete with tag list. I kind of like the arctic-looking color scheme, but I'm open to suggestions if anyone has anything better. :D

Thank you!

For the last week I've been watching the noticeboard scroll by and thinking, why don't we have tags? Do we need tags? Would tags improve the ease of using of this community? Today I did a strawpoll in my journal on whether to bring this up for the community at large, and, well...here goes:

(tentative) TAGS

1. fic - all fic announcements

2. art - all announcements of fan art, manips, wallpapers, and icons.

3. podfic - all podfic announcements

4. vid - all vid announcements

5. fandom news - all Due South fandom news. (That includes announcing news related to other DS communities; people saying: "hi, I'm running a poll in my journal about this nifty DS-related thing"; and announcements like: "hi, we're throwing a con! Come look!")

6. 6degrees - for anything (fic, art, podfic, news, etc.) that's "six degrees of Due South"

7. challenges - all challenge announcements

8. recs - all DS & 6degrees recs

How does this look? What else do we need? I'd prefer to keep the tag list as short as possible (especially as volunteers will be doing the tagging of earlier posts), but please comment if you have suggestions!

If you'd like to volunteer to help with tagging, please comment here, as well.

(I'll edit this post when we have a consensus on which tags we'd like to see put in use.)

Thanks!

Hi! *waves at all the Due South fen*

There have been a lot of new people coming into Due South fandom in the last few months -- which is fantastic, btw -- and I wanted to take a second to say hi and welcome!

Here is a small (and by no means complete) list of communities that you may find interesting / helpful / awesome.

Fiction communities
[livejournal.com profile] ds_noticeboard
[livejournal.com profile] ds_flashfiction
[livejournal.com profile] stop_drop_porn

General interest
[livejournal.com profile] ds_weekly - a complete list of everything happening in the whole of DS fandom. New each Sunday.
[livejournal.com profile] ds_writers - need a beta? This is your go-to place!
[livejournal.com profile] ds_ficfinders - for finding specific stories when you've lost their links.
[livejournal.com profile] ds_recfinders - for finding (any) stories that fit a genre.
[livejournal.com profile] ds_meta - discussions of characters, pairings, and more.
[livejournal.com profile] ds_workshop - writers workshop, currently doing a Q&A series on craft.
[livejournal.com profile] dues_research - answering questions about canon.
[livejournal.com profile] ds_recsredux - fic recs (currently on hiatus).
[livejournal.com profile] ds_icons - scads and scads of DS icons.
[livejournal.com profile] ds_6degrees - fic, news, etc. for film/TV starring DS actors.
The [livejournal.com profile] newbieguide community's frequently updated Guide to due South on LiveJournal by [livejournal.com profile] spikedluv - is a great index of what is where!

As I said, this list barely scratches the surface of everything going on in DS fandom. It's meant only as an introduction, and I certainly don't mean any offense by leaving off any of the fifteen or twenty other communities I didn't list. Rather, that's your cue to go exploring! We are a vibrant and shiny fandom full of love for our show & its characters. (*cough*even Gardino*cough*) :D

A quick reminder of what we love to see posted here on [livejournal.com profile] ds_noticeboard:
• Links pointing us to your fic (please don't post the story itself to the comm)
• Links pointing us to your fan art, icons, wallpaper, etc. (thumbnails/samples are absolutely fine, but nothing too big, please. Remember some people are still on dial-up.)
• News or announcements having to do with DS, DS 6 Degrees, etc.
• Recs! (Yes, you can post recs here!)
• Related challenge announcements, community events, etc. (eg. [livejournal.com profile] midsummer2007, [livejournal.com profile] ds_seekritsanta, [livejournal.com profile] out_of_con_txt, et al.)

2 more notes:
• 6 degrees of DS fic is entirely welcome at the noticeboard! (Yay Wilby fic! Yay HCL fic!)
• We ask you NOT to repost [livejournal.com profile] ds_flashfiction fic here (mainly because it would be somewhat overwhelming if everyone did).

If you ever have any questions about what to post here, please just drop me a note and ask!

Thanks! :D

As a sidebar: [livejournal.com profile] cesperanza is still here in a mod-emeritus capacity but asked me to help out with taking care of day-to-day noticeboard stuff. :)

I did a post like this before, about Hard Core Logo, but I never put it in memories; this one's going in memories (actually, I found the other one too, it's here and it's now in memories, too!)

Anyway! In addition to news and announcements about the cast in their new projects, DS_Noticeboard also welcomes stories in fandoms in which the cast are regulars: so HCL, Twitch City, Men With Brooms, MLaaD, Buried On Sunday, etc.

And yeah, with two out of the three major leads in it, Wilby Wonderful is a gimme. *g*
[identity profile] cesperanza.livejournal.com
[livejournal.com profile] heuradys asked me to clarify the Noticeboard policy on non-DS news and links and I sent her a whole long answer before thinking, duh, I really should post that information here. So here goes, (and I'll pop this into memories as well.)

The [livejournal.com profile] ds_noticeboard, like the [livejournal.com profile] dsreporter before it, has always been a place for news, recs, and stories pertinent to DS and the DS Universe. This includes not only announcements about the cast in their new projects (PG in Slings and Arrows, for instance, or CKR in Wilby Wonderful) but also stories in fandoms in which the cast are regulars: so HCL, Twitch City, Men With Brooms, MLaaD, and related fandoms. We also welcome news stories about any of the regular cast members; the goal, really, is to post important info about the broader DS universe. I suppose there's such a thing as 'too far', but I haven't seen it yet, and I'd probably err on the broad side (I know you're shocked.)*g* I'd rather know that Beau Starr was in something than not, and I'd rather have to say, 'No non-CKR HL stories here' than miss an excellent HL/HCL crossover. *g*

So please, do keep posting links if you spot David Marciano in a guest appearance, or pictures of Camilla Scott on Broadway, etc. Also, please do post things that you have good reason to believe would be of interest to DS fans--that includes fiction in related fandoms as well as their crossovers. (I'd hate to think that we wouldn't get notice of a good HCL/Tales of The City crossover, for instance) and recs to related fannish sites.

***The closest thing to an anomaly we have in our system is the posting of links and info about Hugh Dillon qua Hugh Dillon (as opposed to links about the character of Joe Dick) and I'm gonna go out on a limb here as Admin of this Community and say that DS_Noticeboard is Officially a "Friend of Hugh." (F.O.H.) I am hereby adopting HD as "on topic" for Noticeboard because he is a) an artist who's contributed to the Due South soundtrack, b) an actor not only in HCL but in Twitch City, c) the subject of more RPS than I could shake a stick at, were I inclined to shake a stick at RPS, which sorry, I'm not and d)--you know, if we don't take him, who will?

ADMIN over and out!
[identity profile] iamtaramis.livejournal.com
Hi everyone! Not to be a bother, but when reccing a fic could the pairing be posted also? Yeah, I'm pretty lazy *g*

Okay, okay, whoa; crazy morning. I have been asked in the wake of the closing of the [livejournal.com profile] dsreporter to make an Admin post affirming the following points:

1) DS_Noticeboard eagerly welcomes ALL Due South stories in ALL genres (gen, het, slash) featuring ALL pairings. In this way, we will attempt to preserve the egalitarian spirit of the DSReporter.

2)DS_Noticeboard encourages people not only to post links to their own stories, DS news, or website updates but also to post links to stories they come across (which can be posted either as a rec or as a "hey, for your information" post.) In particular, [livejournal.com profile] estrella30 has voiced the concern that newbies might need encouragement to crosspost here (where the Reporter just used to pick up stories indiscriminately.) So please--do your part to assure newbies or shy people that they should post, or just link their stories yourself. Mentoring is a fandom-wide responsibility, people!

3) An extra-special-shout-out-to-Vecchio people: "Hey! Vecchio-people! We want your stories! Please come post here! Pimp your friends!" (Ces deletes email that says: "It would just really suck if Noticeboard became another outlet for the 'those Kowalski ho's.'") So if this place becomes Kowalski-ho-central, we know who to blame. Bring the Italian, ok? Per piacere? Grazie!

4) An extra-special-shout-out-to-gen-and-het people: "We want your stories! Please come post here! Pimp your friends! We want to read gen stories and Fraser/Thatcher and all that. Do not fear the sweaty man love! DS Fans are pretty omnivorous!"

That's about it for now. Basically, I'm here to keep things on topic and clean, but the success of this place is up to y'all. Let me know if and how I can help!
[identity profile] cesperanza.livejournal.com
This community is for the announcing of Due South fiction (yes, you can and should announce your own!), the sharing of Due South news, and the reccing of old or new Due South stories. It's kind of a replacement for the now-defunct [livejournal.com profile] ds_flashback rec site (though that site will remain as a resource), and it's kind of competition for the Due South Reporter; hopefully it will be a centralized location for due South fans and posting here will insure that that your stories reach their target audience and that your news and recs reach interested listeners.

Please spread word of this site to due South fans.
