As Ben walked over to the counter to start the coffee, Ray’s heart swelled with affection. He loved the man who cared for him so much, who took time to put Ray’s needs before his own. Ray thought after Stella he’d never find love again. But he was wrong, dead wrong. How the hell did he get so fucking lucky in the relationship department? ″I love you, you know.″

Ben turned, a small grin on his face. ″I love you, too, Ray.″

″Just wanted you to know that.″

″I do know that, but it’s nice to hear it.″

″You bet.″

Ray stepped over and wrapped his arms around Ben’s middle. ″You know, I don’t have to go in right this minute.″ He ground himself suggestively against Ben’s groin and whispered. ″We could go back to bed and use it for something other than sleeping.″

Ben chuckled and kissed him thoroughly before pulling back just enough to answer. ″That sounds like a wonderful way to start the day.″

″Works for me.″ Ray caressed the side of Ben’s face, and kissed him again before taking his hand to lead him back to the bedroom.

Ben cocked an eyebrow and studied him a few seconds before he said, ″You’re jealous.″

Ray hated the sound of that even if it was true. ″No I’m not.″

″Are you sure?″

Ray relented and told the truth. ″Trying not to be.″

Ben reached over and touched Ray’s arm. He gave a brief squeeze for reassurance. ″There’s no reason to be jealous of Troy Joseph. He’s a good man and he’s been a decent friend to me and my family over the years. But there is nothing romantic, I repeat nothing, between us. Besides, I also grew up with his wife, Joy Lenore Bishop.″

″His wife?″

″Since they were both sixteen, yes. They married young and have three grown children.″

All the pressure in his brain eased. ″Why didn’t you say that in the beginning?″

″Because it never even occurred to me that you’d be jealous of a man who lives hundreds of miles away and whom I haven’t seen in person in years.″

Ray shrugged, suddenly feeling foolish. ″Sorry. I’m not sure what happened.″

″There’s no reason to feel insecure about our relationship, Ray.″

″I know, but I just heard you talking about this great guy and I just got stupid. My brain doesn’t always work right.″

″Your brain works fine. It’s your heart that sometimes betrays you. Believe me, I know how that feels.″ Ben ran a finger along the outer edge of Ray’s ear.

Ray shuddered and his dick tingled. Ben knew all the hot spots to get him going. ″Fuck. Don’t do that. I’m driving.″

Ben pulled his hand away and sighed with regret. ″It’s going to be a long flight.″

″Tell me about it.″

″Once we’re in our room in Inuvik, we’ll get naked and...″

″Jesus, Ben. Don’t talk like that. It’s hard to drive with a hard on.″

″You said to tell you about it.″

Ray took a deep breath for patience and then glanced over to see Ben grinning in amusement. Ray smirked. ″You are so going to get it once we’re we get to that hotel.″

Ben echoed Ray’s words from earlier. ″Promises, promises.″

″Well, fuck.″ Benton Fraser wasn’t one for swearing, but seeing not one but two flat tires on his Jeep made him channel his inner Ray. He pinched the bridge of his nose, rested a hand against the hood of the vehicle and prayed for patience. It’d been a particularly difficult day and he didn’t need the added aggravation of a car repair. He sighed to himself. There was only one thing for it. He reached into his pocket for his cell phone to call his partner.

″Hey, what’s up?″

″Not my tires I’m afraid.″

″Fuck. Another flat?″

″Two.″

″Well shit.″

″I’m sorry to bother you, Ray, but I need your assistance...again.″

″No problem. Listen, are they stabbed like last time or has the air been let out?″

Ben hadn’t really thought to check. He did a quick visual and saw no obvious puncture or slash. ″I’m not sure, but it looks like the air’s been let out.″

″Good. That’ll be a lot easier to fix. Let me call Jimmy. He can meet us there and he can inflate them. If it’s something worse, he can tow it to his garage and we’ll get some new ones put on.″

″I’m really sorry, Ray. This is such a nuisance.″

″Shut up about that. I should be there in less than ten minutes. Don’t worry. I’ll take care of it.″

″Thank you. I love you.″

″Love you, too.″

Ben still wore his blue uniform, but leaned back against the kitchen counter. He crossed his arms across his chest as he digested the information. It took him a few extra seconds to respond. ″But we don’t talk about your cases in any detail.″

″I know that, which is what I told him. But I just wanted you to know what he might say down the line.″

″And you think he’s serious?″

″I don’t know. It could just be a bluff. He was mad that I turned him down for the job.″

Frowning, Ben sat down at the kitchen table across from Ray. ″Did you tell Gus about what he said?″

″I did. He told me not to worry about it. He thinks Grimm is just pissed about losing so many cases and me not taking him seriously about the job offer.″

″But it is worrying, Ray. If he should make even a suggestion of impropriety on my part, that could make things very difficult at work.″

″I know.″ Ray placed his hand over Ben’s. ″I’m sorry. I just thought you should know.″

Turning his hand upward, Ben laced his fingers with Ray’s. ″I appreciate that. He can investigate, but he won’t find anything. However, the fallout could be unpleasant. Too many people are prone to believing rumors over fact.″

Still upset with the news, Ray grumbled. ″Easy for you to say. You can sleep like a log at the drop of a hat. Me, I have a hard time sleeping alone. You know that.″

″I’m sorry, but what do you want me to do, Ray? It’s my job.″

The hurt tone brought Ray’s head up. He realized he was being a jerk. It wasn’t Ben’s fault he was stuck with such a rotten schedule. Cops everywhere were at the mercy of the higher ups who only cared about coverage, not the impact on the personal lives of the people involved. He understood it, but that didn’t mean he had to like it.

″No, I’m sorry. I’m just being an asshole. I know it’s out of your hands. I don’t like it, but I know you don’t have a choice.″

″Believe me, Ray, if it were up to me, I’d cancel this part of the training, but it’s beyond my control.″

″I know.″ And he did.

Ben cupped Ray’s cheek and teased his thumb along the whiskery jawline. ″I really do know it’s difficult for you to sleep alone, Ray. I wish there was something I could do to help. However, like I said it’s for a limited time. Six weeks isn’t that long in the big scheme of things.″

Ray captured Ben’s hand against his cheek. Then he pulled it away and kissed his palm. ″We’ll get through it.″

″I know we will.″
