Ben beamed with pride. ″Yes. He’s taking the oath on Saturday.″

″Congratulations. But I have one question.″

″What’s that?″

″What am I supposed to call him once he’s converted?″

″He’s not converting, Dad. Being Canadian isn’t a religion.″

″Speak for yourself. At any rate, I won’t be able to call him Yank anymore. So what should I call him?″

″Call him Ray, Dad.″

″Ray is is then. Give him my blessings.″ His father hesitated and then met Ben’s gaze. ″I have to go now. I won’t be back to see him sworn in, but I’ll be there in spirit.″

″Isn’t that the way you’re always around?″

His father actually chuckled. ″An attempt at humor, Son?″

″I try.″

″Keep trying.″

Then his father blinked away and Ben heard Ray shuffling in from the bedroom. ″What’s going on? Who are you talking to?″

″My father was here.″

″Yeah? Been a while. He have anything good to report?″

″Only that he won’t be calling you Yank anymore.″

Ray smirked. ″About time. It only took renouncing my country and joining you guys across the border to finally make that happen.″

″Indeed.″

For primary sign-ups, you can make 20,000-word fics or podfics or equivalent art/vids/craft of any sort, for due South or any other Canadian Six Degrees fandom. There is no cutoff date for signing up - sign-ups stay open until the August deadline.

″So how much longer?″ Ray clapped his gloved hands together and stomped his feet. He could hardly feel them. ″It’s freezing.″

″It shouldn’t be much longer, Ray. Why don’t you head home? I’ll be there shortly.″

″Not going to happen. I’ll go home when you do.″

Ben smiled and leaned in for a quick kiss, but lingered instead. He rarely did that while on duty, but it was dark out and everyone else was kissing their way into the New Year. Ray gave as good as he got and that was plenty. Pulling back, Ben whispered, ″Happy New Year, Ray.″

″Right back at you. It’s a shame you have to work for a living.″

Ben chuckled. ″I rather enjoyed the fireworks to see in the new year.″

″Who needs fireworks when you’ve got the Northern Lights?″

″I have to agree that the Aurora Borealis is spectacular this time of year. Still, it was a rather excellent pyrotechnic display for the celebration.″

″Wasn’t bad. A little loud. I’m glad we left the dogs at home. Yuki would’ve had a fit.″

″He is rather sensitive to loud noises.″

″Which is ironic considering Dief is as deaf as a door nail.″

″Even so, Diefenbaker takes notice of Yuki’s reactions. Together they can be rather rambunctious. It’s best they’re at home.″

″I think I just said that.″

″So you did.″

Alas, nothing new this time (that I could find)! But, I've been posting these monthly fanart digests here for five years now - that's 60 months - and this is only the second No New Art Month (the first was Feb 2023). Which is pretty amazing for an over 30-year-old fandom!

If I simply missed something somewhere, please do post links in the comments!

1) Deb Salisbury posted photos of Paul Gross that she took in 1997, while in the studio audience of Dini Petty's talk show, to the Due South! Facebook group.

Apparently the photos are private to the FB group, so I screenshot and uploaded them here with screenshot of the original post/attribution. The quality you see is the original quality as posted - as she explains, flash photos weren't allowed, so the only lighting was studio lighting. That said, they're pretty good for being no flash.

B. Paul Gross-Addict posted a 1994 CBS bumper featuring Fraser and Vecchio wishing viewers Happy Holidays and New Year's on the due South By South East FB group.

The vid clip, which is in SD VHS quality, originally came from a YouTube channel.

Warning: AO3 comment bot

Hi all, there appears to be a comment bot working its way through due South fics in reverse chronological order. It starts off with a lengthy, praise-focused comment that uses words and phrases like "chaotic", "my heart", and "screaming" a lot - from the comments I've seen, it honestly sounds a lot like an attempt to mimic fangirl speak circa 2010 - and if the creator responds tries to get their email address or Discord handle.

Although there was some initial uncertainty over whether this is a bot, as it is commenting with an AO3 account and appears to draw on specific details in the work, the account it was using as of yesterday (Rosie79) appears to be brand new, comments on a stretch of works one after the other within a short time span, doesn't leave kudos, and consistently refers to everything as a "chapter" even if it's a one-shot. It currently appears as if the bot can only process text.*

While I don't want to encourage anyone to go on a comments section witch hunt and end up reporting legitimate users who just happen to sound a little bit like a praise bot, I do want to remind everyone that you can report suspected bots via the Policy Questions & Abuse Reports link at the bottom of every AO3 page. If an account is otherwise blank, newly-created, and appears to be trying to get you to move to the internet equivalent of a secondary location, it may be worth considering reporting it.

*I did not do any of the digging or conferring that discovered this bot or its characteristics, but I've asked the folks who did to comment on the ds_c6d_bigbang version of this post with any information I may have missed.

So I was doing some dS research and though I haven't seen it recently, the question of "how many seasons of due South were there?" often comes up (or its variation, "were there 3 or 4 seasons of due South" - to which the answer is, "Yes" because both are true, depending which country you're talking about).

Explaining requires the Wayback Machine, but here you go for the definitive answer: it was 3 in the US and 4 in Canada (and other countries), as evidenced by this old page from William and Elyse's due South Page.

Specifically, this section here answers that question: 3 in the US, and 4 elsewhere (like the UK and Australia, in addition to Canada).

That is why the dS episode transcripts that were cribbed from the (very) old (and long defunct) Victoria's (Not So) Secret Site has the collection of transcripts bundled into one big file per season (with only three seasons). Scroll all the way to the bottom of the dS transcripts site, and you'll see the three big S1, S2, and S3 transcripts of all episode of the three individual seasons).

Gratitude to the Wayback Machine and Internet Archive for preserving fandom history. 💜

″I think it’s time we talked about what happened earlier today.″

Ray sighed, wishing like hell they could just forget about it. ″Do we have to? We were having such a good time, eating and just talking about last night’s game. You haven’t niggled once since you got here.″

″Niggled?″

″You know, niggle, that thing you do where you question everything I say. It’s where you argue about the stupidest stuff.″

″I have no idea what you’re talking about. We discuss things and often disagree, but that’s not niggling. That’s just having a conversation. I rather enjoy our discussions.″

″I’m not saying I don’t like how we’re able to give and take, but sometimes you go too far. This thing with the littering is a perfect example.″

″How so?″

Ray took a long swallow of his beer and then poured the rest down the sink. He had a feeling if he finished it, he’d be too loose and he didn’t want that. He had to keep control of his temper and his words. He wanted to say what he needed without revealing too much.

″Let’s have a seat and I’ll try to explain.″

″Very well.″

Fraser walked over and sat down all stiff and prissy.

Well hell. Ray knew what that meant. ″I didn’t mean to hurt your feelings.″

″You didn’t.″

″Did, too.″

″Well, how do you expect me to feel, Ray? You say that my conversational style is niggling, which by it’s very nature has a negative connotation. I’m at a loss. I had no idea you felt that way.″

″Look, I really don’t want to make you feel bad, but you’ve got to understand what I’m sayin’. You’ve got to rein in this zeal you’ve got to arrest any and everybody for the smallest infraction. That might work in a small town, but here it’ll just fill up the jails and get you blacklisted and me along with you.″

Fraser didn’t answer right away, but eventually said, ″It doesn’t work in small towns, either.″

″Say what?″

″My zeal, as you call it, has gotten me shunned more than once during my earlier assignments. It’s one of the reasons I’ve been reassigned so frequently.″

Complementary creators needed!

We have two works that so far have not received complementary claims for the due South/Canadian Six Degrees Big Bang. I know our extended schedule is running up against holiday exchanges, which makes signing up for this more complicated, but we have some really lovely primary works this year and I'd like everyone to get a complementary work if possible - so please, go take a look and see if there's something there that makes you feel inspired!

The unclaimed creators are Creator 1 and Creator 6 in the complementary claims post; complementary works would be due November 21 (with a mandatory checkpoint on November 1).
