Date: 2004-12-12 06:21 am (UTC)I apologize for this being a *really* late comment on your DS story. As it happens, I'm trying to read my way thru four months of DS Noticeboard backlog.
In my opinion, you received much too little commentary on this *very* excellent insight into the young Stella and RayK. In an amazingly few paragraphs you've presented a totally believable picture of the youthful Stella's Ray and given us Stella as well. This could be either teenaged or adult Stella musing on when they were young.
Masterfully done!
Sometimes it makes her feel really powerful, and sometimes it makes her feel really tired.
That one sentence, right in the middle, explains their whole relationship, the power of his attraction for her then. And why that became a problem as she matured. As she gained her own power, in being an adult and in her job, she no longer needed Ray for validation.
That's when the tiredness took over. Being the sole object of such devotion and need became a burden to her. If Orsini is any indication, she's looking for someone with greater social power than her own, a mature-looking man with a beefier physique and an inner sureness Ray never had. In my mind adult Stella found she was attracted to someone more like her father. It's a not untypical psychology.
Ironically, among the many lovable things about Rayk, (as I'm not the first to point out), it's his steadfast and unwavering devotion that Fraser is particularly suited to appreciate.
Anyway, I like this complicated and vulnerable RayK as much as, maybe better than the super cool, sexually experienced one I see in a lot of current DS. Well, I'm flexible, actually, but I do see possibilities in this RayK.
Uhm, not hinting for more about him, but . . . ;) I can't think of a story right now that explores the inner poet – the one who wanted to be John Lennon, not just James Bond and Steve McQueen.
I think I've read most of your fic, but there is a lot listed and it will take me time to work my way thru it. So much great fic, so little time!
Thanks for the great story. And sorry for the late and looong comment.
