He'd wanted to tell Stel he loved her the minute he met her, but he couldn't; he'd wanted to be one of those cops, wanted Stel to be one of those lawyers, whose marriage actually worked. But some days he looks back and it's like they were following a fucking recipe: do this, do that, and in fifteen years, voila! Creme divorce brulee.
