It feels like R/R, an open and shut case for R/R as a matter of fact. I was so surprised by your suggestion that it could have felt like F/K that I went back and reread it, and yeah, it could end up F/K, but it feels like R/R because it's from Vecchio's POV. Almost like, if it does end up being F/K, we won't see it happen, because presumably, Vecchio wouldn't witness it, so we wouldn't either.
It does make sense, and I think it's perfectly natural to read it with the R/R pairing, since those are the characters who're in it (*g*), except that if there's actually a spark of that there, it makes it much closer to sexual assault, rather than plain no-frills assault. Which... ewww. You know? My squick. So I personally wouldn't go from this to R/R. (Thanks so much for taking the time to re-read and answer. Much much appreciated.)
::rereads AGAIN:: Okay, I'd sort of dismissed the assaulty vibe for a couple of reasons. Assault (sexual or no-frills) is not a squick of mine, plus Kowalski is unhappy and spoiling for a fight, and I took the shoving as more of a posture (even though it freaked Vecchio out, it didn't really freak me because I don't think Kowalski would force himself on someone, but Vecchio is understandably cautious because he doesn't know Kowalski too well, presumably). I can totally see Kowalski physically confronting another guy and have it not mean too much to him.
So maybe the R/R I saw was sometime in the future, after they'd been partners for a while and things had settled down in Kowalski's mind, and there was calmness and understanding between them, and not so much with the adversarial verbal taunting and sudden closeness with walls.
