Back when I first prepared A Guide to due South on LiveJournal, I noticed that, while there were a couple of fan fic challenge communities, there was no community for the general posting of fan fic that was not the product of a challenge. So
audrarose,
msgordo,
sori1773 and I created one. *g*
ds_slash is a due South slash community that encourages anything and everything (discussion, fic, icons, recs, searches, wallpapers, vids, etc) so long as it is slash in nature and concerns due South, the characters, or the actors (including their other roles).

Date: 2005-08-31 02:14 pm (UTC)I'm also going to be heading back to school in a few weeks, and will probably have to do a major trimming of my flist, or just stop reading most of it. Joining another community would mean more people cross-posting the same information, and I really can't handle more info to read. Sorry, I don't think I'll be joining. But I know that I don't speak for everyone and you couldn't care less what one individual does, so good luck with membership and participation.

Date: 2005-08-31 09:38 pm (UTC)You're absolutely right that there are other ds communities that are doing many of the same things. We're a basic slash comm that will hopefully offer a few new things like drabble trees, caption challenges, etc. We're hoping it'll be a nice addition to the dS LJ presence. Personally, I'll take all the Fraser/RayK I can get. *bg*
Sorry to hear you won't be joining us, but it's completely understandable. It always bites when RL limits the fannish time. *bg*

Date: 2005-09-01 10:56 am (UTC)There are so many new ds comms it's pretty hard to keep track of everything. In the past week alone there have been what seems to be 2 new ds_comms and 1 proposed. Do we *need* anymore as a fandom? And with other comms doing the same things surely it would be easier to simply tailor the existing comms to new/extra needs?
Also I share the question is this is an F/K slash comm? While that seems to be the majority view of slash in the ds fandom there is us the F/V part of the fandom who are also writing/reading slash. Amd though they are pairings I personally am not into there is V/K stuff and K/T stuff and I hear that many are writing F/V/K these days too. Would this slash be welcome?
I ask because your community icon is that of Fraser and Kowalksi which visually would appear to give the impression of exclusivity to that pairing. I know icons which include all aspects of the ds fandom must be hard to find but some sort of generic icon with the words ds_slash on it would surely be more inclusive? That is if indeed the idea of the comm is to have inclusivity of all parts of the ds slash fandom.
Personally, I'll take all the Fraser/RayK I can get. *bg*
I have to say you are very lucky as there is much activity on LJ about that pairing. I would love there to be far more Fraser/RayV stuff out there because it is a huge problem we are very much in the minority. Currently at ds_flashfiction (I checked yesterday 31st Aug) there is only one F/V story for the No Power Challenge, mine. I have not read a new F/V piece of fic other than mine for well over a week. A week without any new fic in my fandom for my pairing *at all*.
I don't want to bitch and I don't mean to moan. I know mine is the minority pairing I accept that. I love it that's why I write it, read it, but you F/K guys are so lucky with what you have. There wasn't even anything to cater for the F/V pairing exclusively until I set up
I have been pleasantly surprised at the lack of animosity on LJ and by postive comments made to me by people who are both of the F/K and F/V part of the fandom and people who are part of the F/K part alone. But the ds fandom is more than just one pairing. Heck it's about more than one genre (I know though your comm is exclusively slash). But sometimes it's very hard to find other ds.
I am worried more comms (with an F/K slant) may distort the view of the ds fandom having people simply see it as being F/K. We know it isn't but we shouldn't want to perpetuate this myth.
I admire you for taking the time to set up a comm but I have some serious reservations.
I hope I haven't come across as whining there are things I have said I wanted to get out for a long time (hence the longness of this comment). Please understand I am not bitching about your new comm.
I wish you luck.

Date: 2005-09-01 11:26 am (UTC)I have been pleasantly surprised at the godd comments I have from people in the ds fandom into F/V and F/K and those who are exclusively into F/K. That's very nice to see.
But I have reservations that the perpetuation of the ds fansom as a whole is that ds is all about F/K. It isn't I know that, you know that but what about the gen, the het, the F/V? All these areas seem to be marginalised. I know your comm is slash alone and I am not suggesting you change that. We don't all like the same thing, that's good variety is the spice of life after-all, but we on the fringes sometimes feel neglected.
I wish you luck with your new comm but I have my reservations about if it is needed and the way in which it seemingly portrays F/K as the only slash pairing.
I hope I haven't come across as whiny or bitchy. I love my pairing and my part of the fandom. I just hope that it isn't forgotten by wider fandom.

Date: 2005-09-01 12:45 pm (UTC)Truthfully, when we stated that all slash pairings were welcome in our first post and in the userinfo we assumed that people would believe our statement. Your suggestion regarding the icon is a good one though, and it's an easy one to change.
We sincerely hope that you come over and that both Rays will be represented in fic and artwork.
