Snippet:
″It’s not me who deserves your apology.″ As they hurried along the sidewalk, Ben continued scolding the wolf. ″Your cavalier attitude toward punctuality has made us late again. Ray won’t be happy.″
Dief woofed a feeble sorry but Ben was sure it wasn’t nearly as sincere as his companion tried to pretend. ″Well, you should be more considerate. Ray is involved in a very important case and he’s under a lot of undue pressure. You know how he frets. A little groveling on your part would go a long way to convincing him that you truly regret your choice to frolic in the snow like some undisciplined adolescent this morning.″
As they neared the front door of the apartment, Ben stopped suddenly and stared at the empty space where the GTO should be. There was no car and no Ray. His eyes narrowed and his heart raced when he saw the red toolbox on the sidewalk. It was the one he’d given Ray for Christmas. Ray would never have abandoned it and he would never have left without Ben, not without phoning.
Hurriedly, Ben stepped to the space and noticed the different footprints in the snow. There was at least one print other than Ray’s. All the impressions were refrozen which meant that Ray had been taken soon after they’d parted. That gave the kidnapper at least a thirty minute lead. Ben pulled out the cell phone and dialed the Lieutenant’s direct number.
″Welsh, the two-seven.″
″Sir, Ray’s been abducted.″
