C Is for Canada
by Grey

Canada was the boogeyman. It was the monster under the bed, the thing that sometimes kept him awake at night as he lay next to his Canadian partner. Ray knew when he fell for Fraser, he’d have to someday deal with that creature, that big fear of abandonment and change that always lurked at the back of his mind. He knew eventually his partner would need to return home to Canada. But like most disasters, Ray didn’t know when it would happen, so he just tried not to think about it. Most of the time that worked.

Then the mail arrived from Canada one morning and Ray’s nerves went to shit.

″What’s that?″

Ben studied the envelope but didn’t open it. ″I’m not sure.″

″Who’s it from?″

Fraser dropped the unopened letter on the kitchen table. ″The return address says RCMP Headquarters in Ottawa.″

″Canada?″

Ben rolled his eyes in amusement. ″Yes, Ray, Ottawa, Canada.″

Ray swallowed hard, not really wanting to know why the bigwigs would be writing Ben, but desperately needing to know. Official letters were rarely anything good. ″You going to open it?″

Fraser poured his hot tea and then sat back down at the table. ″I must admit to experiencing a bit of trepidation?″

″Trepidation? Does that mean you know what it’s about? Are you in trouble again and didn’t say?″

After taking a sip of his tea, Fraser put the cup down. ″I don’t think I’ve done anything recently that might cause issues, but one can never be completely sure. Usually if there’s important news about my position, it comes through the Inspector. I’m surprised to receive a notice here at the apartment.″

″Don’t see why. You changed your mailing address to here, right?″

″I did, but usually anything official still comes through the Consulate. It’s sent free of charge that way. To be mailed to a home address means they had to pay for postage.″

″You think it’s bad news because they had to pay to mail it? I know the Mounties are cheap, Ben, but surely they can afford a stamp or two.″

″I never said the RCMP was cheap.″

″Didn’t have to. I know what they pay you.″
