Snippet:
Ray added a tease. ″Besides, your basic people skills have shot through the roof since you met me.″
Fraser’s serious expression shifted into a grin. ″Are you saying you’re responsible for me being less formal and more approachable than before?″
″You got another explanation?″
Fraser shook his head and sat back down again. ″No, I really don’t. I must confess that working with you has opened my mind to possibility that good social skills can certainly be a huge bonus when doing this job.″
″Go figure.″
″That’s not to say that you couldn’t hone your own social skills somewhat.″
″You spoiling for a fight?″
″Not at all, but threatening to kick people in the head isn’t exactly considered a positive social skill in most quarters.″
″Hey, I only did that with scumbags.″
″And Detective Dewey.″
Ray chuckled as he flashed on some of the more interesting times he’d threatened his obnoxious colleague with bodily harm. ″Oh, yeah, that’s true, but I stand by that call. He might have had a badge, but he was a first class scumbag. So, what’s your point?″
″My point is that we could both use some practice in that area.″
Ray’s eyes narrowed. Fraser was definitely up to something and then Ray saw the row of cabbages on the counter and some pointy party hats hidden behind them. A memory niggled and then it hit him like a slap. Fuck. ″Please tell me you didn’t.″
″Didn’t what?″
″Plan a surprise party.″
Fraser worked hard to keep a straight face, but failed miserably. He confessed the truth. ″It’s just a small gathering. There’s Turnbull and David along with some of the other people we’ve met in his family. It’s only about ten people. David is hosting it at his place. I think he said something about trying out a new recipe for ribs. I’ve been planning it all week.″
Ray covered his face with both hands. The last thing he wanted for his birthday was to put on a show for people he barely knew yet. When he finally checked out Fraser’s worried expression, he caved. ″Okay, but I swear if you make us do party games like Twister or Bobbing for Trout, I’m out of there.″
Fraser beamed. Instead of promising to behave, he patted Ray’s arm like he couldn’t wait to get started. ″It’ll be fun. You’ll see. You’re going to love it.″
Ray groaned and wondered how hard it would be to drown himself in a fish tank.
