...or more to the point, Outside Canada

I was just looking on wikipedia, that great resource of mostly accurate information. Just as the Hitch-Hikers Guide to the Galaxy is mostly reliable. And the people who find the Guide less than reliable are usually not able to correspond with the publishing house based in Ursa Minor... because they are suffering from terminal lack of oxygen or been eaten by the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal.

Anyway, International Liason Officers are real!!!

The RCMP International Operations Branch assists the Liaison Officer (LO) Program to deter international crime relating to Canadian criminal laws. The IOB is a section of the International Policing, which is part of the RCMP Federal and International Operations Directorate. Thirty-five Liaison Officers are placed in 25 other countries and are responsible for organizing Canadian investigations in other countries, developing and maintaining the exchange of criminal intelligence, especially national security with other countries, to provide assistance in investigations that directly affect Canada, to coordinate and assist RCMP officers on foreign business and to represent the RCMP at international meetings...

I just thought that would be really interesting, now to find out if Mounties have guns in Canada, and more importantly, would Ray have a gun if he was a Mountie in Canada.

You should rewatch the gun-throwing scene in MOTB. *g*

You're welcome.

Yes, Ray would have a gun if he was a Mountie in Canada... in fact, one of the "glitches" of the show was that Fraser, as a Mountie, would have automatically had his gun licence accepted. So I've always chosen to think that he has made a conscious decision not to do the little bits of paper work to allow him to have a gun for some reason of his own. (Perhaps he's worried, like his sister Maggie, what he might do with a loaded gun.) As far as I understand it all he would have to do would be go down to a shooting range and demonstrate competence with his weapon.

But yes... if Ray became a Mountie he would carry a weapon.

So... have you looked into it? Would it be possible for an American cop to become a Mountie?

Yep, provided he had Canadian citizenship. That's one thing you absolutely have to have to be a Mountie.

So, that would mean that if Ray applied to be naturalised as a Canadian citizen he could apply to work in the RCMP? I suppose he would have to retrain for a while... does it ever happen? That would be pretty cool...

He'd have to already be naturalized, but yep! They did away with the age restriction on Mounties some time ago, before Ray's time even, so yeah. He definitely could! Admittedly, he wouldn't get any kind of special treatment for having been American law enforcement, I don't believe, but if he wanted to do it, he could.

I have heard of naturalized Canadians applying, though none specifically who were prior US LEOs. But it's not unheard of; here in the US, we actually had a British citizen working for a local department, though the laws here only require that they've got a permanent residency visa. Up there, you have to have full citizenship.

I'm not a fanfic writer (mostly because my English is terrible), but I hope someone is going to make a story (or some stories) from your idea, because I'd love to read it/them. :)

Thanks for the offer. :D Though, it would be impossible right now: I started working on my ds_c6d big bang story (though it's not a fic), so no time for me for working on something this hard as well. :/

I have no beta for the big bang story. In case you aren't going to do a story for the big bang as well, may I still consider your offer for it? I don't know if my story is something you could like, though. No hard feelings if you don't feel to. I also think I'm being quite rude asking this way, so, don't worry if you don't want to.

Not sure where in this comment exchange to reply, but I wrote a fic where Ray K went to Depot and became a Mountie. Of course, I'd still love to see other people's versions of it, too!

I think you'll find it's a S&W. I knew they carried guns (of course, I served them every day at Wendy's. How could I not notice the guns...) but I had to look up the model for my Nano story last year in which (I know no one is reading Naked Truth, but if you are, turn away. Here's a spoiler.) Meg is held hostage with her own gun.

::nodnods:: It was up until more recently a S&W .38. Now they carry 9mm, I believe, semi-automatics.

Yes. XD Mounties have guns in Canada. They are a police force, patrolling on the federal, provincial and local level. While Due South only briefly had a cameo by duty-uniformed Mounties when they were transferring Ian McDonald, they do patrol in cruisers and they do all of the same policing that Ray would already be familiar with, albeit under a different set of laws. Mounties do everything from street level enforcement, ala the local cop you see running a speed trap, all the way up to years long undercover operations to ferret out federal crime. If Ray were a Canadian citizen (that's a requirement for the RCMP) and managed to pass the various hurdles (physical, polygraph, psych, background), he would certainly be able to become a Mountie.

The psych thing is always what bothers me with Fraser in dS... I have no idea how he passed it! And they say he doesn't lie... I think he's got it down pat, he certainly fooled somebody!

Hm. Well, Ben's not strictly nuts. Or, he probably wasn't when he joined, likely at the age of nineteen. Plus, when he applied back then, standards were some different; stricter in terms of height/weight/physical, less restrictive on psychological. Whereas Turnbull applied during the 'current' standards, and Ray would as well.

Actually, you're right, Benny's not nuts... when he joined it was before Victoria, it was before his father's death. He will have had some emotional issues surrounding his father's perceived abandonment of him, and his mother's death, but they're emotional things, not psychological things, and he'd be well enough in control of himself that they wouldn't be a problem.

Exactly. (I should have been in bed like, an hour and a half ago, so don't mind my brevity?) And the standards were some different then, anyway; Ben came in after Mike, so he missed the massive expansion the Force went through right then, but with his credentials (his Dad, his ability to deal with remote postings) he definitely woulda been given some preferential consideration, too.
