Admin: hello & DS SOCIAL!
Oct. 9th, 2009 10:07 amHi all! There are lots of new faces around DS/C6D fandom lately, so I wanted to take a moment to say hello and sketch out what goes where, and then we'll start the party! :D
As you know,
ds_noticeboard is the place for sharing links to your fic and art. We also love to see posts about: meta, icons, podfic, fanmixes, recs, fandom news, fandom chats, interviews with DS people, challenges, new communities, TV/Film screening dates, fan cons, freecycle/sale items, and pretty much anything except RPF. (That has its own place, thus sparing our peace of mind. :P)
DS has spawned multiple fandoms collectively known as C6D (six degrees of Canada), meaning work the DS actors have done besides DS). Anything DS or C6D is welcome here, but if it's C6D, please tag it 6degrees. Speaking of tags, please tag all your posts for ease of finding stuff again later.
On characters: We do our best here to keep the noticeboard friendly to all characters and pairings/moresomes. That means ALL Rays, all Frasers, all Vecchios, Dief, Gardino, Frannie, Meg, Mort, Denny Scarpa, slash, het, femslash, gen. Character-bashing makes Dief howl and Fraser cry, so please, please be courteous concerning other people's character-loves. *g*
Last, the links in the right nav bar of the
ds_noticeboard main page take you to fandom resources, of which there are many. As always, if you have any questions at all, please just ask!
Please come say hi and introduce yourselves in the comments below! Talk, mingle, pimp your con, add memes in new comments so people can answer in threads, and so forth! I'll start some questions off in the first comment, but feel free to add more. Okay? Okay!
eta: Now with picspam!

Date: 2009-10-09 05:36 pm (UTC)1. I've been in the fandom for a little longer than two years, and I'm not planning to leave any time soon. It's my happy place, and I've gotten to know all sorts of interesting and lovable people. I like to read, write, rec and beta-read fic, and record and listen to podfic.
I love the show because of how it can be all whimsy and magical realism one moment and then turn around and be serious. I love it for Fraser. &hearts &hearts &hearts I love it for the dogsledding (we are all shallow in different ways, okay?). I love it because it made me realize that I could actually write stories myself (or maybe that was the fandom--I love the social aspect of the process of writing).
2. Slings and Arrows, definitely. And Wilby Wonderful.
3. Huh. I'm not really in it for the actors, but for the characters. Paul Gross, maybe?
4. Fraser or Geoffrey, I guess. But I'm only saying that because they're my favorite characters, not because that's his best acting.
5. Hmmmm. I don't know? I am bad at these kinds of questions.
6. Sorry, I never really got the HD thing. Maybe I'm immune to the Hugh flu? I like him in HCL, though.

Date: 2009-10-09 07:11 pm (UTC)I just fell in love with it from the very first episode- it's charming, funny, totally surreal in the best sort of way, and Fraser is beautiful. I love the writing, the overall sweet nature (with a side of totally wacky), and the fandom community is awesome.
2. What are your favorite C6D fandoms?
Slings & Arrows
3. Favorite Canadian actor?
How to choose? If forced to go for only one, I'd have to go with Paul Gross.
4. Quick: which is Paul Gross' best role?
Geoffrey Tennant on Slings & Arrows, but Benton Fraser is a very close second.
5. Name the same for other C6D actors.
I think I like CKR best on Due South (Ray K is just so very endearing) but he was excellent on BSG and Wilby Wonderful.
6. Hugh Dillon: Y/N? Explain.
The only thing I've seen him in is Hard Core Logo. I was told it was the Canadian version of Spinal Tap, and so I was expecting pure comedy. I was therefore slightly disconcerted by the actual content, so I'm not sure it was the best way for me to be introduced to Dillon.

Date: 2009-10-09 07:21 pm (UTC)I started watching dS like... a week ago and only just finished ep. 1x08 by now. I got hooked by a very, very roundabout way though podfic, more or less :) I just wanted to do a little research, and then...wham! omg! Fraser!!! Marry me?! heh.
I'm a bit atypical in that I don't get into TV fandoms at all (hey, I'm a reader/gamer, I don't watch any TV), so I have no idea who Hugh Dillon is or which actors are Canadian or...
but let me tell you that I'm psyched that this fandpm is still alive! even though I'm over a decade late to the feast, so to speak :D

Date: 2009-10-09 07:36 pm (UTC)I know I and many other people read DS fic long before ever seeing an episode.
Hugh Dillon is the former lead singer of the Headstones, who played Joe Dick in Hard Core Logo (costarring CKR). Hugh is on a show called Flashpoint and on a recurring series called Durham County, which is the scariest thing I've ever tried and failed to watch.
Also, MANY of us came late to the show, although there's a very large minority who saw it on first airing, too. :)

Date: 2009-10-09 07:51 pm (UTC)1. What makes Due South a fandom of your heart?
I love the show for soooo many reasons. But I love the fandom because everyone i've met (only online so far, alas) has been so kind and supportive. And willing to agree to disagree. I was in another fandome years ago that got rabidly OTP (which okay, the show *had* an OTP, but the rabid part got annoying), and it turned me off of fanfic for quite some time. Sentinel (another fandom that has some very nice folk) lured me back, and I found dS through it, and LJ through dS.
The show. I have no words to express my love for the show itself. For how interesting each and every character is, and how layered. For how the fantastic seems commonplace, and no one bats an eye. For how instead of just changing partners for Fraser, a huge, strange, unbelievable double-undercover idea was used. For canon slashiness. For deaf half-wolf companions and ghostly fathers with advice that's annoying instead of "beyond the grave omniscient." For how amazing it was when it took itself seriously, and when it just totally didn't. I just love it to nanoscopic pieces.
I love lots of fic and lots of shows, but the combination of the people here, the fabulous fic, the variety of writing challenges, and the awesomeness of dS itself, have well and truly hooked me.
2. What are your favorite C6D fandoms?
Ooh. Slings and Arrows, definitely. Wilby Wonderful. I've only seen HCL once, but only because I haven't had time to watch it again and again. And I have a huge stack of stuff to watch. Ask me later?
3. Favorite Canadian actor?
Not a question I can really answer. To look at, apparently CKR, as he's on every computer I have (sneaks peek at wallpaper *happy sigh*. But for acting, I don't have a favorite. There's quite a lot of talent to choose from, and I just can't pick a fave.
4. Quick: which is Paul Gross' best role?
Arggh! Another hard question. But a few favorites are Fraser, Geoffrey, and now Darryl (Eastwick).
5. Name the same for other C6D actors.
I have a minimum of knowledge to answer this (though my C6D viewing is expanding). I LOVE CKR as Duck. And Leoben (though I'm barely into the series so far). Ummm... ask me again next year?
6. Hugh Dillon: Y/N? Explain.
I really was fascinated by him in HCL, but have seen him in nothing else (but Durham County is awaiting me on dvr). I've read some great crossoever DC/dS fic with him and RayK, so I guess I'm a yes. I don't have the major love for him others do, but he's interesting, and I very much like Headstones (enough to have two CDs on their merry way to me).

Date: 2009-10-09 08:16 pm (UTC)1. What makes Due South a fandom of your heart?
Everything. Really. The show is, as some others of you have said, very layered. Plus, how can you not love a show with a riding off into the sunrise together on a dog sled ending?
2. What are your favorite C6D fandoms?
HCL, Wilby Wonderful, Slings & Arrows, Flashpoint
3. Favorite Canadian actor?
Callum, naturally. *g*
4. Quick: which is Paul Gross' best role?
Geoffrey Tennant from Slings & Arrows
5. Name the same for other C6D actors.
Ellen Page was brilliant in Juno. Hugh Dillon in Flashpoint. I'm reserving Callum's best role for when I see Shattered.
6. Hugh Dillon: Y/N? Explain.
Hell, yes! What can you say about Hugh? Wow, talk about a man that's been through life, and to see where he is now both career-wise and personally from where he was, it's amazing.

Date: 2009-10-09 08:17 pm (UTC)This is my happy place. Seriously! This fandom is supportive as hell. You're stuck with a story you will get advice and cheers; life is threating you badly? You will get lots of hugs and picspams and just what you need to make you feel better.
Also this fandom never stops to amaze me.
2. What are your favorite C6D fandoms?
Slings & Arrows, ReGenesis
3. Favorite Canadian actor?
PAUL GROSS
I know there lots more out there but he will always be my favourite.
4. Quick: which is Paul Gross' best role?
Geoffrey Tennant. He just blows my mind.
5. Name the same for other C6D actors.
Callum!
6. Hugh Dillon: Y/N? Explain.
No.
I can't even explain why. Sometimes when lots of people are into someone I get a knee-jerk reaction and I just run the other way. Stupid, I know.

Date: 2009-10-09 09:44 pm (UTC)I have been a fan of Due South ever since the pilot episode first aired in the US. I spent many a night scanning every page of the TV guide (a small printed magazine that used to be a MUST on every coffee table back in the days before it became the TV guide channel.) looking for the next new episode. I liked it because it was sweet and fun. It was a drama/comedy/mystery/buddy show with characters that on the surface, were caricatures, but underneath had a depth that was lacking in many of the other shows of its time.
2. What are your favorite C6D fandoms? Last Night. Wilby Wonderful. Twitch City. I’m really liking Eastwick. (Last night’s ep made me laugh out loud and I rarely do that.)
3. Favorite Canadian actor? CKR
4. Quick: which is Paul Gross' best role? Benton Fraser, of course. I really liked Gus in "Buried on Sunday". And I have a real soft spot for Alex, the ranch hand in “Getting married in buffalo jump”
5. Name the same for other C6D actors. Callum is wonderful in “Last Night”. His character made that movie make sense to me. And once it made sense, I thought it was an incredible movie. It stuck with me for days. (Until Callum made sense of it for me, I was completely lost and all –WTF??)
And I just want to give Newbie of “Twitch City” a big squeeze every time I see him. I love, love, LOVE the episode where Curtis stops watching TV and Newbie goes into emergency crisis mode (was that “Shinto Death cults”?) I also adore the episode “Planet of the Cats” because it is absolutely hysterical and I think Diefenbaker guest stars too.
6. Hugh Dillon: Y/N? Explain. No. Sorry – just …no. no.
A new question :)
Date: 2009-10-09 10:09 pm (UTC)We can admit it, even though we love them dearly, some of it is really bad. Make your eyes bleed bad... Embarassed to admit we watched it bad... Please tell us your agent owed someone a favor bad...
Example --> Callum's guest appearance on "The Bionic Woman" (Oh the horror! Poor Callum, forever caught in that wretched episode! It was sad, really.)
Re: A new question :)
Date: 2009-10-09 11:10 pm (UTC)And besides he got his ass kicked and that was just depressing.
I don't have any examples of my own but I suspect as I go further into the C6D fandom I'll find something. ;)

Date: 2009-10-09 10:56 pm (UTC)Due South fills me with joy, it is without a doubt my comfort fandom. I'm all bout the fic (Fraser/Kowalski is my pairing of choice) and there is something about the characters that really lends itself to the kind of fic I crave. They are complicated and interesting, but also basically good and real in a way that allows for emotionally honest storytelling that is still in character. Seeing Ray and Fraser find love and happiness makes me happy. Also, the writing in this fandom is amazing. I am continually awed by the quality of the stories produced for Due South. It is also a fandom that seems to be filled with talented, interesting, and nice people. I lurk in all the fandoms I don't write in and have been lurking in Due South for years, but every now and then (like today) I branch out a bit because I am drawn to this fandom in a way I am not to others.
2. What are your favorite C6D fandoms?
I don't know them that well. I really like the few episodes of Slings and Arrows I saw. I love BSG, but don't think of it as a CD6 fandom since I started watching it before I knew CKR was in it.
3. Favorite Canadian actor?
I'll go with Paul Gross and CKR
4. Quick: which is Paul Gross' best role?
Allowing for limited knowledge, I'll say Slings and Arrows
5. Name the same for other C6D actors.
I may not have watched BSG for CKR, but he was amazing as Leoben
6. Hugh Dillon: Y/N? Explain.
I've never seen him in anything

Date: 2009-10-10 02:55 am (UTC)1. What makes Due South a fandom of your heart?
Really? You're going to make me try to articulate my love for dS? Really? *sigh* I don't think I've loved a fandom this much since my early days in the land of The X-Files (my very first fandom!) I think the characters are what I find so endearing. The show itself tends to be schmoopy a good part of the time, but in a loveable and oft-intentional way. I love watching it as an American and trying to sort through all of the sly, meta Canadian humor. I love making fun of Vecchio's schnozz, and how every person other than Fraser in Chicago is either Polish or Italian (it's true, I'm an Italian myself.)
On a more serious note, I think what really brought me into this fandom was the storytelling. I'd stumbled across a piece of RayK/Fraser fiction about a year ago, before I had even seen the characters in action. And the way people had been inspired by this show to weave such beautiful stories...well, it's something I remembered fondly from my early fandom days. The enthusiasm and dedication towards seeing these characters fleshed out right is a wonderful thing.
dS, I suppose, is one of those shows that is just timeless for me. Not in a superficial way (because, let's be honest, this show SCREAMS 90s, and I mean screams), but in the themes it presents. The stories it tells. The idea of Fraser; a one-man army who was more vulnerable than he was ever able to show, who acted so naive but really believed in little...just the idea that he was so far removed from this beautiful, untamed wilderness that he loved so much, that it was the only place he truly belonged and his attempts to cope with that separation...trying to sort out the problems of life that will follow you everywhere. The idea that Vecchio and Fraser, from two so separate worlds, could form such a close friendship. The idea of Ray Kowalski, who didn't just want to "kick people in the head," but wanted a life for himself. I think the biggest thing that dS really symbolizes for me is how people, no matter where they come from, are just looking for some sense of peace.
2. What are your favorite C6D fandoms?
Well, this one obviously. I'm not super involved in C6D fandoms, but I'm big into Wilby Wonderful and HCL.
3. Favorite Canadian actor?
Undoubtedly Callum Keith Rennie.
4. Quick: which is Paul Gross' best role?
I haven't seen Slings & Arrows yet (EEK!) so I would have to go with Benton Fraser. Though I really enjoyed his performance in Wilby Wonderful, and his performance in Passchendaele was just...fantastic. I would have to toss in my vote for Buddy as well. I'm also enjoying him in Eastwick, believe it or not. It's pure silliness, but it seems to suit him.
5. Name the same for other C6D actors.
Ehhhh. As I said, not very heavily involved in C6D. Callum is my favorite, and that's a bit tough. I'd say his role as Duck in WW is my personal favorite, but Kowalski is right up there too, and I adored him as Lew Ashby on Californication. I've only seen a few examples of Hugh Dillon's work, but my favorite of his is HCL.
6. Hugh Dillon: Y/N? Explain.
Okay. Hugh. Here's the deal. I really, really like you in HCL. I do, I swear. And I've enjoyed you in Flashpoint, from what I've seen. You're a way more convincing lead than Elliot from Just Shoot Me. I am into you, just not into you. Capisce? But if I saw you on the street, I'd give ya a hug anyway ♥
<-- I'm sure his fan letters are riddled with such compliments //sarcasm// Everyone seems to know quite a bit more about his career than I do ;P

Date: 2009-10-10 03:59 am (UTC)1. What makes Due South a fandom of your heart?
Quality fics (everything from drabbles to epic length) and awesome fangirls who aren't aloof if one doesn't ship the same way they do. Coming from fandoms where people lost their shit if you liked X/Y over Y/Z, well, it means a lot to me. (Of course, I came into this fandom--as a lurker before becoming more active later on--years after the Rays Wars so, my POV will definitely be different from older fen).
A lot of both the general camaraderie and enthusiasm comes from the show itself, of course. Mixing quirky/whimsy with grittiness/realism AND really great characters, dS is total win!
2. What are your favorite C6D fandoms?
Other than dS, I'm hopelessly ga-ga about both HCL and Slings & Arrows. They haven't quite reached the same fever pitch as dS in my fannish heart, but who knows right?
I'm also very sweet for Flashpoint, Wilby Wonderful, BSG and Durham County.
3. Favorite Canadian actor?
I won't front. I've got Callum fever through and through.
4. Quick: which is Paul Gross' best role?
Geoffrey Tennant slides a couple of places past Benton Fraser, but only barely.
5. Name the same for other C6D actors.
Callum is fantastic in HCL and Flower and Garnet. I loved him in The Invisible as well. His RayK is, of course, the very first thing I ever noticed when I first came across the show many years ago. *flails a little at CKR's acting*
6. Hugh Dillon: Y/N? Explain. Haven't gotten the Hugh flu--a fact I totally blame Callum on. :) I do like Hugh, his intensity and how honest and open he is unlike other musicians-turned-actors.

Date: 2009-10-10 04:11 am (UTC)1. What makes Due South a fandom of your heart?
Because it's a nice place to come home to. It's odd to say that I'm glad the series is over, but it means that it's not going to go on too long, or shoot itself in the foot. Maintaining a high quality of the show itself often seems to maintian the quality of the fandom. Coming into it late is kinda sad...but then again that's also a good thing. All these awesome stories have been established, but of course there's always more room to grow, and I don't have to wait to jump right in. So all those things are great about the fandom, also it's high caliber and, as far as I can tell, a polite, kind, fun fandom much like it's show. Also, there's Paul Gross.
2. What are your favorite C6D fandoms?
Slings and Arrows
Does Wonderfalls count? It was an American show so probably not...
Wilby Wonderful
3. Favorite Canadian actor?
Paul Gross...or Carrie-Anne Moss (does she count she was born in Canada and appeared on Due South)
4. Quick: which is Paul Gross' best role?
Geoffery Tennant. Though of course honorable mention goes to Benton Fraser (I'm here for a reason). And love for Dayrl van Horne as well, the voice! The cheesy and ridiculousness it's so awesome.
5. Name the same for other C6D actors.
Martha Burns in Trojan Horse as the Southern Senator was quite awesome
Caroline Danvers in Paschendaele is beautiful and amazing
CKR in Wilby Wonderful really doesn't need stating it just is
6. Hugh Dillon: Y/N? Explain.
Nope not for me. I tried watching HCL and wound up fast-forwarding most of it. Really not my thing which basically puts me off as I have no other context for him.
What are some of the WORST things you've seen DS actors in?
See above answer...I know this is highly unpopular opinion (I think?). It just didn't work for me.
Okay so picspam was suggested. No idea where I got most of these I just hoard and collect things...also this is probably a bit over the top but...
My roommate the textiles major has geekgasms over the cabling of this sweater.

P.S.: the last pic (Irene/RayV)is wonderful and achy at the same time. How I wish we had seen more of that pairing (in a previous episode perhaps)before things went horribly wrong for those two. :/

Date: 2009-10-10 04:26 am (UTC)I started re-watching the show that I first loved back in junior high for its heroic characters, quirkiness, and excellent dialogue almost a year ago, then I discovered fan fiction by accident, and found enough confidence to start writing again, which has at least partly saved my sanity, seeing as my life revolves so much around my job. The writers are not only talented, they’re brave and generous. I was also very relieved to discover that there are other people on the planet who are also obsessed with Canada and CKR.
2. What are your favorite C6D fandoms?
Last Night, Wilby Wonderful, BSG, Twitch City
3. Favorite Canadian actor?
CKR, aka The Obscure Object of My Desire, aka “Crush Boy” according to a couple of my friends.
4. Quick: which is Paul Gross' best role?
Fraser or Geoffrey Tennant
5. Name the same for other C6D actors.
Where to begin? Molly Parker in Suspicious River is probably the only one I could say for sure.…
6. Hugh Dillon: Y/N? Explain.
I don’t know. I don’t own a television, so I have to wait for netflix to get on the ball, which could take years. HCL didn’t exactly grab me. Maybe I wasn't cool enough to get it...

Date: 2009-10-10 04:51 am (UTC)It was Cesperanza and Resonant's fanfic that pulled me in; so I'd read a fair chunk before I even saw my first episode. One of the interesting bits of entering a fandom that way is having to develop my own ideas of who the canon characters are, as separate from the fanon that drew me in to begin with: I'm still working on it, so some of the storylines in my head are dialogues with that fanon.
1. What makes Due South a fandom of your heart? I heart these characters so much. They're weak, they're strong, they're doing their best: you can't help but ache for their vulnerabilities and lost chances and loneliness; you can't help but love their friendships and loyalty. Coming from a very OTP fandom, and even though I'm a very OTP kinda gal, I love love love the F/K/V threesome (except it's a foursome, really, because forgetting Dief is worthy of fannish excommunication). And I love the way the canon teeters between whimsy and grim reality, and winks at me until I suspend disbelief over the most unlikely things.
In terms of the fanfic community, I still feel as if I'm easing my way in: I'm really looking forward to finally making it to a con and meeting as many of you as possible.
2. What are your favorite C6D fandoms? I'm still sampling, but I have to say that Slings and Arrows stands out as the one I pimp to friends and family, although dS is the fandom of my heart.
3. Favorite Canadian actor? Weird answer? It would have to be Jonathan Frid, who played Barnabas Collins in Dark Shadows: I was utterly obsessed with him when I was twelve! And omg I mean utterly: I used to keep a diary chronicling each episode :) Oh, how I have not matured much. Currently? Yeah, Paul Gross.
4. Quick: which is Paul Gross' best role? Sorry, got to be boring and add to the Geoffrey brigade. Though if I'd had a chance to see his Hamlet, it might have been that :) I love the little bits we get of him playing Ophelia in S&A, too, and of course Ms Fraser rules.
5. Name the same for other C6D actors. Kill me now, but even despite the leather and the rings, I prefer CKR in dS to HCL, partly because Ray is so much more open and vulnerable (I haven't seen BSG yet, so I'd like to keep the options open, here). Though I am very fond of both Buddy and Duck, I loved James Allodi in Wilby Wonderful: why has no-one written them as a threesome, I must ask? Plus honourable mention to Enrico Colantoni in Galaxy Quest: rarely has a random alien been so utterly likable.
6. Hugh Dillon: Y/N? Explain. Mmmm, can I get away with 'maybe'? I have problems with HCL, is the truth; but I do like what I've seen of Ed Lane in Flashpoint, and I'm hoping to catch up with more of that and Durham County (if only because of

Date: 2009-10-10 06:28 am (UTC)1. What makes Due South a fandom of your heart?
I love the show for its optimism, the way that Fraser tries, every day, to make the world a better place. the magical realism is fabulous. Diefenbaker! RayK with his twitchy bas-ass geek cool. The clever dialog. And the ballsy way they switched both main actors and sets between seasons 3 and 4, and put Fraser in the same angry, confused state about it that the audience was in.
I love this fandom because you are all sweet, and smart, and enthusiastic.
2. What are your favorite C6D fandoms?
due South and Sling & Arrows
3. Favorite Canadian actor?
Mmmm, not sure, more into the characters than the actors.
4. Quick: which is Paul Gross' best role?
I was impressed with his PM in Trojan Horse. A lot of sheer presence and unspoken emotion there.
5. Name the same for other C6D actors.
Not sure.
6. Hugh Dillon: Y/N? Explain.
N. The actor thing, again. However, he's so darn Canadian in Flashpoint, I want to give him a hug.

Date: 2009-10-10 02:58 pm (UTC)That transition is the main reason I ended up watching due South. I'd read some fanfic and asked a friend who I knew had watched the show for clarification on the premise -- I was hitting oddd recurring ideas but couldn't tell if they were canon or just popular ideas in the fandom (pretty much all canon, dS is whacky like that). When she told me about the switch between the Rays, I was immediately sold on the show.

Date: 2009-10-10 06:35 am (UTC)1. What makes Due South a fandom of your heart? The excellent fanfiction was what drew me in. When it comes to the show itself – the weirdness and the characters - this is one of the rare shows were I basically just love almost everyone. I also love the fandom for being full of lovely creative people and for exposing me to lots of great Canadian media.
2. What are your favorite C6D fandoms? Durham County, Slings and Arrows, Hard Core Logo and Twitch City (that’s like all of them isn’t it? Well they are all my favourites.
3. Favorite Canadian actor? I have too many favourites as I discovered when I tried to list them. Only one? Maybe Ellen Page.
4. Quick: which is Paul Gross' best role? Geoffrey Tennant – Slings and Arrows. Geoffrey!!!
5. Name the same for other C6D actors. Hugh Dillon – I think Mike Sweeney (Durham County) wins out in the end but he’s excellent as Joe Dick in HCL too. Ellen Page - Hayley in Hard Candy.
6. Hugh Dillon: Y/N? Explain. Hell yes. I saw people talking about the Hugh-flu and was a bit puzzled but after having seen Durham County I understand completely.

Date: 2009-10-10 12:23 pm (UTC)YES. That is SO one of th ereasons I love this fandom - it isn't just about the show, it's about the actors, and their other roles, and sharing the glee of it all.

Date: 2009-10-10 01:55 pm (UTC)2. What are your favorite C6D fandoms? Canon-wise -- due South, Slings & Arrows, Wilby Wonderful, Last Night, Men with Brooms, Hard Core Logo. I don't really keep up with the various C6D fandoms, though I read most of the Slings & Arrows fic that comes through
3. Favorite Canadian actor? Wait, I have to pick? *cries* Okay, um... Callum Keith Rennie, with apologies to Mr. Paul Gross.
4. Quick: which is Paul Gross' best role? Geoffrey Tennant! But followed closely by Benton Fraser.
5. Name the same for other C6D actors. Hahaha, no. That's too many actors for my sieve-like memory. But... Callum Keith Rennie as Ray Kowalski.
6. Hugh Dillon: Y/N? Explain. Yes, please. Durham County did me in. I liked Hard Core Logo okay when I first saw it. Rewatching HCL brought it from 'okay' to 'wow.' The camera as unreliable narrator? So cool! And now I kinda love the director. But I didn't really think Hugh Dillon was all that impressive, despite the chemistry with CKR. I did like his music. But his role on Durham County was impressive. And I love him on Flashpoint -- though not, as it turns out, enough to be bothered that it's not currently airing here.

Date: 2009-10-10 03:00 pm (UTC)Oh this is a fandom-specific thing? Thank goodness, I was afraid my google-fu was failing! I saw it a couple times in dedications in fic headers, and spent way longer than I'm going to admit trying to find out the origin of the expression.
I know what it means, generally speaking, from the context, but could you please clue me in on the specifics, satisfy my curiosity? :)

Date: 2009-10-10 03:05 pm (UTC)Magical realism is an awesome thing.
2. What are your favorite C6D fandoms?
Slings & Arrows, dS, Twitch City.
3. Favorite Canadian actor?
That depends entirely on the day and how recently someone has made me watch Voodoo.
4. Quick: which is Paul Gross' best role?
Geoffrey Tennant, hands down. Or hands up. \o/
5. Name the same for other C6D actors.
I'm not sure Darren Nichols is Don McKellar's best role, but considering how fond I am of the character, he gets honorable mention here. Otherwise: field too large.
6. Hugh Dillon: Y/N? Explain.
I respect his work, but I am not in love with him.

Date: 2009-10-10 03:35 pm (UTC)1. What makes Due South a fandom of your heart?
I could say it was the show, which is full of wackiness and angst and subtext and gorgeous men and sexy women and a turtle and a deaf half-wolf.
I could say it is the amazing writers in the fandom, writing the best stories I've ever seen. Stories that make me laugh and cry and dream and most times should have been filmed as actual episodes.
And all of those things contribute to my love of this fandom, but what really makes due South the fandom of my heart is the people in it. Never in my life have I seen a better group of people - smart, sassy, giving, beautiful. due South is the fandom of my heart because the people in the fandom have taken my heart in loving hostage. And I don't want it back.
2. What are your favorite C6D fandoms?
All of them. See
3. Favorite Canadian actor?
All of them.
4. Quick: which is Paul Gross' best role?
Slings & Arrows
5. Name the same for other C6D actors.
CKR - RayK in due South
Hugh - Mike Sweeney in Durham County
Don McKellar - Patrick Wheeler in Last Night
6. Hugh Dillon: Y/N? Explain.
Oh, hell, yes, baybee! His voice, his energy, is raw sexual charisma. His hair, which I miss. His intense blue eyes. Oh, yeah.

Date: 2009-10-10 09:57 pm (UTC)So, HI! Hello! Oh, questions!
1. What makes Due South a fandom of your heart?
I'll admit it; I wandered over for the fic. I just kept seeing stuff, hearing stuff, and thought "wow, if people still love this show this much after this long, it must be something special."
And it sure was - I don't think I was expecting to LOVE it, but it took all of 20 minutes of the pilot before I fell for Fraser like walking right off a cliff. WOW. So sad and so pretty, and the character makes me want to believe that people are actually decent. Benton Fraser destroys my natural sarcasm defenses.
And the rest of the show! Magical realism! Deif! Ray K and his secret nerd glasses! Ray V and the Riv! Dief!
And the fandom is something else - everyone here is smart and funny and nice, and cares about each other as more than a screen name, and it's all sort of amazing.
2. What are your favorite C6D fandoms?
I don't read a lot outside of dS, but I do greatly enjoy Sling &Arrows, Hard Core Logo, Twitch City, and Flashpoint. I'm enjoying Eastwick and all it's Paul-as-Darryl glory.
There's also my EPIC love for Durham County. Brilliant television.
3. Favorite Canadian actor?
Despite my love of Paul, I seem to be more drawn to Callum's work, perhaps because it tends to be darker.
Also, my crush on Molly Parker, VISIBLE FROM SPACE. Since seeing her on Six Feet Under, I've thought she was the most stunning woman ever, but Twitch City! She's all fuzzy and adorable and freckled and AWWWWW :D *flappy hands*
4. Quick: which is Paul Gross' best role?
Fraser. Eye ♥ Benton Fraser!
5. Name the same for other C6D actors.
Callum - I'll stick to Kowalski. Though I love him as Billy Talent and Wilby's Duck. Leoben scares me a lot.
Hugh - Mike Sweeney(Durham County) all the way!
Molly - Hope (Twitch City)! See above, re: fuzzy sweaters. And freckles. Awwwww.
6. Hugh Dillon: Y/N? Explain.
OMG YES! I seem to have gotten drawn further into Hugh-ness than anything else in this fandom. I have all of the Headstones albums (via ebay, from Canada, even. There's a part of me that wants to learn how to vid, JUST to make a Supernatural vid for "Teeth and Tissue"). I would listen to this even if I had NO CLUE who he was.
I love Flashpoint. Durham County is one of my favorite TV things ever, even outside of a fannish/ C6D context.
Plus, I find it hard to not love a man who can curse like a rockstar and still use words like "altercation" and "ignoramus", both at the same time.

Date: 2009-10-11 01:41 am (UTC)So far I'm loving RayK the most, too, and I think it'll take an awfully special role to shift my opinion. Duck was adorable, I wanted to hug him. :) Leoben, though... brrr!

Date: 2009-10-11 06:42 pm (UTC)Not much is up on my site as I can't believe too many people would be interested in me, but here goes. I have just left my day job as my llama breeding has taken over most of my waking hours, I also keep a couple of horses, a Dogue de Bordeaux, a high maintenance daughter and a long suffering partner. I am emigrating to France this month and hope to emigrate to Canada as soon as I can!
1 Due South, where do I start? It has everything from clever writing, humor, great depth to the main characters, but for all its magical elements it also deals with real issues and depicts life and relationships not always being perfect. DS is my special place to retreat to and thankfully my partner and daughter love it too!
2 Wilby, Men with Brooms (which even my man will watch over and over again -it's become a happy evening thing for us), Slings and Arrows, H2O and I have soft spot for Buried on Sunday, in fact I sort of like anything with PG except 20,000 Leagues which is the only available DVD I haven't bought!
3 PG and the man just gets sexier as time passes (and I do like some of his music)
4 Fraser but Geoffrey is a very close second (Fraser needs more love) and seems from interviews that I have seen to be very different to his own mannerism
5 CKR is easy on the eye, I liked Last Night,Tin Man, Californication(keeps reminding me what Ray would look like in all the post COTW stories), Wilby and even my man will watch MWB over and over (it's become a happy evening thing)
6 No, sorry, watched HCL for CKR but not my scene, Callum's pretty though.
DS writers, artists and pod ficcers - you are wonderful! DS is such a nice community to escape into. Thank-you.

Date: 2009-10-11 10:34 pm (UTC)And as C6D fandom in a whole...well, I love how new stuff comes out all the time (Eastwick!) to keep me engaged and squeeing. This is fantastic!! David Maricano was just on House and the squee over that was AWESOME. Vecchio! Hi, Vecchio!!
This is a great community of people, and I am so, so happy to be here. YAY!
2. What are your favorite C6D fandoms?
DURHAM COUNTY IS THE SHOW OF MY HEART, OKAY. It has everything I love in a show--amazing characters who are complex and BRILLIANT, gorgeous imagery and cinematography, and the story just SLAYS me. I mean, I can't actually textually render my love for this show. I love gothic horror and this is such a perfect modern example, with fresh new ideas and I just CAN'T TELL YOU HOW MUCH I LOVE IT. I will happily attempt to do so at any given moment.
I actually came into C6D fandom through BSG. Suspicious River (which I love), Flashpoint, random episodes of Degrassi: Next Generation (it had Hugh, okay!) ::giggles:: I loved Last Night and Highway 61 a lot, too. And I've seen Hard Core Logo lots, with and without the commentary ;)
But definitely Durham County is my favorite. SHOW OF MY HEART. I MIGHT HAVE MENTIONED. I CAN GO ON AND ON ABOUT IT. I EVEN MADE A FANVID. I HAVE NO PATIENCE. THIS SHOULD TELL YOU HOW MUCH I LOVE IT. THAT AND MY INABILITY TO STOP CAPSLOCKING.
I'm not going to make any new friends on this thing because now I look crazy. :(
3. Favorite Canadian actor?
Hugh Dillon :)
4. Quick: which is Paul Gross' best role?
Geoffrey Tennant, Slings and Arrows. ::swoons::
5. Name the same for other C6D actors.
Callum: I adore Ray Kowalski beyond all sense, but I think Gary in Suspicious River and Jim Field in Falling Angels. I think Callum is an amazing actor, and I do wish he'd do more comedy because he's so hilarious as Ray K. But I love his intense, evil bad guy roles, too. Hi, Callum! You are awesome <3
Hugh: Mike Sweeney on Durham County, no question. He's so amazing, I don't even remember he *is* Hugh Dillon. And I think I'm in the minority of people that find him sexier without hair ;) I do love him as Joe Dick, too, though.
Don McKellar: RIGHT SO HE MAKES ME SQUEAK AND CAPSLOCK. Probably Darren Nichols in Slings and Arrows, but I looooove him as Pokey Jones in Highway 61 SO MUCH OKAY. And I also love him as Patrick in Last Night!
Molly Parker: Leila in Suspicious River, and Florence in Center of the World.
6. Hugh Dillon: Y/N? Explain.
THERE AREN'T ENOUGH Y'S IN THE WORLD, OKAY.
I'll stop capslocking so I can maybe NOT scare away people I don't know. I love the Headstones, I love Hugh's newer, mellower stuff, I love him in Durham County (we've been over my love for DC, y?) and he's the reason I keep watching Flashpoint.
Seriously, I make high-pitched squeaking noises about him. I love the way he loves EVERYONE, and gives credit to everyone involved in whatever he's doing (the way he talks about the women who write/direct/produce Durham is so awesome, he just LOVES them), I love how he still cusses in interviews, and his laugh, and the way he adores his wife and always talks about Callum Rennie. I think he's amazing, and fantastic, and I've never fangirled an actor/musician like this before.
...my Hugh flu is kind of at critical levels, y? Y.
I am late posting to this, and probably scaring y'all with my capslock problem. Anyway, look at Hugh!
no subject
Date: 2009-10-11 11:10 pm (UTC)I like him better without the hair, too. He's all streamlined :D I LOVE how Hugh as Mike is NOTHING like Hugh as Ed Lane - like I forget that it's the same guy. And there's this little gasping, sighing noise Mike makes in the kissing/ sex scenes that leads to toes curling.
(That pic is oh so very distracting! Though I keep wondering about the clothes hanger. Why? Apparently, there is nothing to do in this here room but take off ones clothes and look awesome?)
