I adore what you say in your second paragraph there, about the sensitivity and respect. It's so very true and one of the things that makes it so wonderful.
I'm a sucker for magical realism too - it's what makes it possible for the show to careen around from deep drama to slapstick comedy to heartwarming to absurd....and still seem completely plausible. (to a degree, at least)
