″Have you noticed anything different about Dief lately?″

Ben turned from doing the supper dishes and stared at Ray in surprise. ″What?″

″I said have you noticed him being off a little lately.″

″Off?″ Ben dried his hands on the towel and walked over to his partner. ″In what way?″

″Slower, sleeping more, not really eating as much. He’s got a little come-and-go limp on his right front leg, too.″

Ben frowned and came around to sit next to Ray on the sofa. He kept his eyes on his sleeping friend. ″You’ve noticed these things?″

″I was asking you that.″

″To be honest, I’ve been so busy with work lately I’ve not paid that much attention.″

Ray hated to bring it up, but he’d been noticing changes for a while. At first he’d hoped he was just imagining it, but he was pretty sure he wasn’t, not anymore, not after the whole turning down the doughnut situation. Dief never met a treat he wouldn’t eat. ″It’s been going on for a few weeks. I wanted to brush it off, but today when Cheri had a powdered doughnut, he wasn’t even interested. Only ate about half his kibble, too. I’ve never known Furface to turn down food. You think something’s wrong?″

″He’s not said anything.″

″I know he’s not due for his shots, but maybe I should take him to the vet tomorrow.″

″I suppose it couldn’t hurt.″

Ray noted Ben’s worried expression and put his hand on his arm for comfort. ″I’m sure it’s nothing. Maybe he just needs a tonic or something. He’s getting older.″

″I hope that’s the case, but it could be something serious. I should’ve been paying closer attention.″

″Like you said, you’ve been busy. It’s getting closer to Christmas. Things get hectic for cops this time of year.″

″You’ve been busy, too, Ray.″

″I know. I’ll call the vet first thing tomorrow morning and take him in. I’m sure it’s nothing big. Maybe he ate a bad rabbit or vole or something just as disgusting.″

″Perhaps.″

″Don’t worry about it. I shouldn’t have said anything.″

″No, I’m glad you did.″ Ben got up and stooped beside Dief and petted his head several times. It was their regular signal to go out for their nightly walk. The animal opened its eyes, but instead of getting up, Dief only snuffled softly before closing his eyes again.

His expression darkened and Ben took the time to run his hand slowly over Dief’s back, along his sides, then under his belly and his over neck. His hand stopped right at where the right leg met his chest. ″There’s a lump here.″

Ray got up and shooed Dief out of he way and opened the door to a sight he never expected to see in a million years, not in Canada at least. Jesus fucking Christ. ″What are doing here?″

″Is that any way to greet an old friend, Stanley?″

″We’re not old friends and don’t call me Stanley. It’s Ray.″

″Well, that could get confusing while I’m here. So, when does Benny get home?″

Dief, the traitor that he was, jumped all over and licked Ray Vecchio within an inch of his life. The taller man pushed him down. ″Careful, wolf.″

Ray noticed for the first time that the man wasn’t empty-handed. Double fuck. It couldn’t be. ″Is that a baby?″

With all the pride in the world, Ray Vecchio held up the little bundle wrapped in a furry blanket. ″Meet Little Benita.″

Little Benita let out a big scream.

Well fuck. Ray could relate.

Ben picked up his cellphone and dialed Ray’s number. His partner answered after just two rings. ″Ray Kowalski.″

″I love you, Ray Kowalski.″

″Ben? What’s wrong?″

″Nothings wrong. I just wanted to hear your voice and tell you that I love you utterly and completely.″

″Okay, now listen. Have you been drinking? Did someone slip something in your tea? What gives?″

Ben couldn’t help but grin. His partner was nothing if not suspicious even of a simple impromptu I love you. ″Nothing like that. It’s just that I wanted to hear your voice and tell you how I feel.″

After a short pause, Ray asked, ″Tell me what that woman did. Did she make a pass? Ask you to run away on tour? What?″

Ben chuckled. ″I’ll tell you tonight.″

″Tell me now. Otherwise, I might just end up making a scene at the station.″

″You wouldn’t do that.″

″I might do that if you don’t tell me what’s going on. You met Tracy Jenkins at the airport, right?″

″I did, yes. She apparently thought my asking her to do the concert was a ploy to renew a romance that was only in her own mind.″

″Fuck. I’ll set her straight. Let me at her.″

″There’s no need, Ray. I told her about us. She accepted it rather well considering.″

″Considering what?″

″Considering she went on to ask if Ezra was single.″

″Jesus.″

Ben stopped and put the guitar on the table. ″So you are.″ He stepped over and gave Ray not only a hug, but a short kiss. When he pulled back, he caressed Ray’s cheek. ″Did you eat yet? I can heat up supper if you haven’t.″

″I didn’t get a chance to grab anything all day, so, yeah, supper would be great. Thanks.″

″Not a problem. I’ll reheat it while you go freshen up and change. Where’s Diefenbaker?″

″He was pissed that I didn’t feed him. He’s out chasing rabbits.″

″Well, he’s got plenty to chase. We’ve got several active breeding pairs in the area. We could harvest enough to never buy meat again if we wanted.″

Ray made a face. ″Please tell me I’m not having rabbit for supper.″

″No. I actually splurged and bought some minced beef on the way home. We’ve got meat loaf.″

Ben knew that was one of Ray’s favorites. ″Wow. I’m sorry I was late.″

″It’s not a problem, Ray. There’s plenty left. Did the new lead you mentioned when you called turn up anything helpful?″

Ray shook his head as he was reminded of his discovery. ″I’ll tell you later. Right now I just want to take a quick shower and get rid of the stink of the day. Do I have any clean jeans?″

″You do. I put the laundry away earlier. They’re in your second drawer.″

″Thanks.″

As Ray headed for the shower, he hummed a little of the song Ben played earlier. He wondered what it was called. He’d heard it before, but he couldn’t place it. He’d ask later after he’d washed off the grit of the day. Digging up dirt could be filthy business.
