A Short Field Guide to Vegas!Vecchio

I'm a huge Ray Vecchio fan, and an even bigger Ray/Ray fan. As such, I am also utterly fascinated with the concept of Vecchio working undercover in Vegas, what he may have done there, and how (or whether) he survived it.

I think being a Ray/Ray fan and being a Vegas!Vecchio fan go hand in hand, because 99% of Ray/Ray fics naturally take place after Vecchio's back from Vegas and more often than not, they tend to allude to his time there and what effect it might have had on him.

As far as canon goes, we don't have a hell of a lot to work from, but I think that just works in our favor because it leaves the field wide open for fan interpretation.

First let's admire the man in action. He's utterly swoon worthy, and I do wish we'd gotten more screen time. Such a bad-ass... (If you were looking for intelligent meta, you won't really find it here. *swoon*)

Here we have Ray's exit scene, which is sweet or heartbreaking depending on how you look at it. I do love Fraser's expression around :51 that clearly says, I can tell you're full of shit.

Here is what canon gives us about Ray and the situation in Vegas:

In transcript form.

Welsh explaining Ray's absence and the undercover gig:

From Burning Down the House

Fraser: Sir, I will confess at first I was a little worried that maybe I had a hole in my bag of marbles, so I did an impromptu investigation. I would like to present in evidence. . . These are the registered fingerprints and these are the fingerprints of the man in question. They do not match. This is an official dental record, and this is a cast I made of the suspect's teeth. And they do not match. The shoe size is also inconsistent, and finally, as you can see, the suspect's nose is fully 7 millimeters smaller than Ray Vecchio's. In conclusion, this man is not Raymond Vecchio.

Welsh: Constable, you have an uncanny power of observation.

Fraser: Thank you.

Welsh: Of course he's not Ray Vecchio. I've been trying to get to you to talk to you about this. There's an operation going on. This operation comes from way up the ladder. Details are kinda sketchy, but all we need to know is Ray Vecchio has gone deep under cover with the mob. Now, to protect his identity, we have to make believe that this guy is Ray Vecchio.

Fraser: I see. . . Lieutenant, have you by any chance heard from Ray?

Welsh: Oh, no, no, and I don't expect to, either.

Fraser: I understand.

A wonderful tidbit from Pike that I missed when I originally watched the show, but that I consider to be HUGE in terms of Vecchio's whole undercover arc, and what it can do for fanfic. It's canon that Ray was groomed for undetermined length of time, and if you're not paying attention, you'd miss that. (I'm pretty sure during my first viewing I was all "OMG, Maury Chaykin!!"):

From Spy Vs. Spy

Pike: Maybe you should show me some I.D., Ray Kowalski!

Ray: What do you - what are you saying?

Pike: Three years ago the Bureau O.C. Division started tracking a Mob lieutenant in Las Vegas known as Armando 'the Bookman' Langoustini. Turns out Ray Vecchio is a dead ringer for Langoustini. So what do they do? They start grooming him. And then, what do you know? What do you know happens? Car crash. Car crash, the Bookman's killed. Was it an accident? You be the judge. Anyway, this opens up a window of opportunity, so the Feds slide in Ray Vecchio as the Bookman. But this is a fragile cover, so they need to cover the cover. They need a new Ray Vecchio to slide in there at Division 27, Chicago P.D. They pick you.

(this youtube contains the Pike scene, but is long https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JDV_bDw3sKU )

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Also another bit that could be easily missed, but proves just how deep Ray's cover really is, and what lengths they would go to to protect him.:
From Dead Guy Running
Fraser: Well sir, I have a hypothetical question.
Welsh: Oh great, hypothetical and important.
Fraser: Well, some questions can be both.
(They enter the office)
If the need were to arise sir, to speak to Ray Vecchio, the real Ray Vecchio, in person, would that be possible?
Welsh: If Ray Vecchio's mother were on her deathbed, and her last dying wish was to see her son's face again, hear his voice one last time, I would send the new Ray Vecchio. Does that answer your question?
Fraser: Yes sir.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Then, of course, there's Call of the Wild, which pretty much sparked off an entire ship in approximately eight minutes of actual screen time.

Vecchio explaining how the deal with Languistini works:

From Call of the Wild

Vecchio: Muldoon has weaponry for sale and a buyer he just needs somebody to broker the deal. So the ATF places two agents a Colittle and a Cartwright. Muldoon makes the agents and kills them both. So the ATF suspect an inside leak. They turn to the FBI who turns to me Armondo Languistini. The Mob brokers the deal.

Welsh: How does the deal work?

Vecchio: Two stages. the first is the nerve gas that you stumbled upon and all I know about the second is that it's big and it's scary.

Welsh: And who's the buyer.

Vecchio: Again don't know, very cagey very secret. The basic idea was that I would broker the deal and then we'd nail Muldoon and the buyer

Welsh: Which doesn't work out

Dewey: Because Fraser and Ray show up and blow the whole thing out of the water.

Huey: Bada SSSHHH

Welsh: So what now?

Vecchio: The meet with Muldoon's set for nine. My cover should hold until then. That's our window.

Welsh: All right we've got to move. Huey and Dewey you run down the location the whole layout all right? Francesca pull everything on Muldoon any possible connection. Fraser, you run it from your end. All right we got six hours let's use them.. Oh Ray,

Vecchio and Kowalski: Yeah

Welsh: No I mean, oh I can see this is going to be confusing huh? Look you be Ray Vecchio 'cause you were Ray Vecchio to start with...

Ray [smug]: Right.

Kowalski: And who am I?

Welsh: Good question. You can be Stanley Kowalski

THE SCENE OF GLORY:

**Kowalski's desk**

Kowalski: What the hell do you think you're doing?

Vecchio: How can you work in this mess?

Kowalski: No worse than the piles of crap you left all over the place.

Vecchio: Well my piles of crap were organized.

Kowalski: My mess is organized.

Vecchio: Well why don't you just organize it some place else.

Kowalski: Ok. [Throws all the papers across the room] Is that good?

Vecchio: Have you got a problem?

Kowalski: Maybe, just maybe I don't like the way you're sashaying around trying to take over everything.

Vecchio: This is my desk, it's my life, now get over it.

Kowalski: Well you get over this [Vecchio and Kowalski start to scuffle]

Frannie [breaking them up]: Ok Ok all right, back off Kowalski that's my brother you're talking to so just stay out of his face. And you! Did they give you testosterone shots in the mob or what? Work!

Kowalski: Listen I err.

Vecchio: Hey! Forget about it.

Kowalski: It's just err, it's so sudden..Look I know you were coming back, I just, well didn't think it would be so soon so.

Vecchio: I know it feels as though you died and you didn't get everything done. You know that's how I felt when I walked out of here.

Kowalski: How's Vegas been?

Vecchio: Undercover's lonely.

Kowalski: That it is.

Vecchio: Well you got Fraser.

Kowalski: Right

[Both laugh]

So much better live. (I'll be in my bunk)

There's also kind of nice little bit of Vecchio acting as Armondo at the station. I think they could have done better, but he was supposed to be in a hospital bed, so:

**Interrogation room.**

Vecchio: You ever heard of the Iguana family?

Guy: Yeah

Vecchio: How about Armundo Languistini?

Guy: The bookman? Of course I mean In my line of work that's a guy you look up to. I mean he'd kill you for a parking spot.

Vecchio: What would you think about a guy who got on the wrong side of Armondo Langusitini?

Guy: I'd say the guy's pretty stupid.[Vecchio throws down his ID on the table.] You're the bookman?

Huey: Uh hum.

Guy: You mean I'm-

Huey: Yep.

Guy: Ok, Muldoon met this guy a couple of times, the buyer

Vecchio: Give me the name.

Canon would have us believe that he comes out of the experience pretty well and heads off to Florida with Stella. FANS would have you believe that lasted about a day and a half. (Okay, maybe longer). They would also have you believe that Vecchio carries some pretty heavy scars from Vegas, which is far closer to what would likely have been the truth.

But that's the glory of the whole Vegas!Vecchio subplot - we don't know. We get to make it up. And fans, being the amazing people that they are make up some WONDERFUL STUFF.

Vegas!Vecchio fic recs

There are LOTS of great Vegas stories out there, so I just selected a few favorites, and a couple that showcase the variety of ideas fans come up with.

Double or Nothing by brynnmck (Ray/Fraser)
Summary: Ray's first hint that Danny might've abandoned the Vegas glitz for the Florida sands was a bottle of high-end chianti, left on Ray's doorstep with a large ceramic iguana curled around it.

It's ironic that one of my favorite Vegas fics is NOT Ray/Ray, but what are you gonna do. This one is one of my all-time Due South favorites of any theme.

Safe House by keerawa (Ray/Ray)
Summary" In the summer of 1996, two CPD detectives meet for the first time in a safe house on the outskirts of Chicago.

I ADORE this one! (Seriously). This supposes that Kowalski is so good at undercover, they not only hire him to take Vecchio's place, they have him helping Vecchio prepare for Vegas. It's glorious. NOTE: It does have some warnings, including dubcon.

Through a Mirror-Her Reflection by Aingeal (Ray/Fraser)(crossdressing)
Summary: When they first asked him to do it, Ray didn't believe them. He couldn't go undercover as a woman. A different take on season 3 and Ray Vecchio in Vegas.

This one is fabulous and very original, but totally believable. Vecchio's not Armondo the mob boss, he's Amanda Languistini, bookkeeper.

Fledgling by llassah (Ray/Ray)(wingfic)
Summary: There's no official summary to post here. This is a very cool, and VERY HOT, story about Vecchio's Vegas job coming to an end the morning he wakes up with wings - and what happens after that.

Shadow of the Bookman by ButterflyGhost
Summary: The FBI have approached Ray to go undercover with the mob, and Ray has said 'no.' But it turns out that there is a skeleton in the Vecchio family closet. What is the secret which Ray can't allow to be revealed, and how do the FBI use it to turn him into the Bookman?

I will go on record now as saying I haven't finished reading this, but what I HAVE read so far is very good, and this thing is just HUGE - I adore epic fics.

And finally - a little more off the beaten path. I have an accutal ZINE rec:

Bye-bye, Bookman by Muriel Perun (Ray/Fraser)
Summary: It's been over a year, but Ray Vecchio is still haunted by his time spent undercover as deadly criminal Armando Langoustini. Nothing about his former life fits anymore, least of all Fraser, now back in town after his failed relationship with Kowalski. Can Vecchio pick up the pieces of his life when so many parts still seem to be missing?

The Vegas aspects of this are just incredible and get deep, deep into it. PLUS, in this one he's asked to go back undercover as Langoustini - in prison. It's amazing.

There are SO MANY MORE. Here's a link to the Vegas search on Archive of our Own.

http://archiveofourown.org/works/search?utf8=%E2%9C%93&work_search[query]=due+south+vegas

It would be really fun if people would leave recs to their own favorite Vegas themed fics in the comments. There are so many good ones, and there must be a whole sub-set of Ray/Stella I don't even know about.

And a vid rec, because apparently I've had my head under a rock

Phoenix by Scribe (songvid)(gen or F/V depending on your feelings about that)
Summary: The city lights are dancing for you."

Essentially, Scribe has CREATED the lost Vecchio-in-Vegas up OUT OF THIN AIR. It's so incredibly well done, and so compelling and heartbreaking. And dark. Really dark. (But then, I don't think people ever really go looking Vegas!Vecchio fluff)

OMG! I don't know how in the hell I missed this. (thank you [livejournal.com profile] keerawa for bringing this to my attention. This guide was woefully inadequate until now.

And I'll leave you with some screen caps

Pst, something seems to be amiss with your vid embeds. Unless it's my browser. I can see the screen caps fine, but under the vid cuts I just see white space.

This is a FANTASTIC post and I am in love with everything about it.

I am highly flattered that you recc'd Safe House! (And also amazed that you adore it. That fic was an agony for me to write, because Ray's in such a messed-up head-space, and it still makes me wince every time I read it. So I'm both pleased and surprised whenever a reader has a positive emotional response to it.)

Also, I wanted to share this, just in case you haven't seen it. 'Pheonix' is a constructed Vecchio-in-Vegas vid that had the audience in tears at BP a couple of weeks ago.

Thankyou so much for reccing Bookman! Basically I need a teeshirt saying 'the Bookman are my brain'. Anyone who knows me realises that last year I was completely lost in Vegas. So it means a lot to know people are still reading it.

I am dying to get hold of Bye Bye Bookman as well, but can't seem to find where to buy it. If anyo e could favour me with a link I would be full of squee.

[identity profile] bghost.livejournal.com 2014-04-25 03:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Gargh... can't find it. Now I know he goes back in as Armando in prison I have to read it. And Paisano. And..... and...

I will try again later. TYK.
