″Canadian Consulate, Constable Benton Fraser. How might I be of service?″
″Hey, Frase.″
The formal tone vanished. ″Hello, Ray.″
″You busy?″
Ray heard the scrape of wood as a chair was moved in the background. ″Actually, I was about ready to take a short lunch break.″
″Really? Great. I’ll pick you up.″
″I actually brought my lunch today, Ray.″
Ray flashed on seeing his partner making his peanut butter sandwich and packing it in with his apple and some celery sticks that morning. ″Go ahead and chow down, but I’ll still pick you up. I’ve got an interview and I need your back up.″
″I only have a half hour for lunch today. The inspector’s quite intent on getting this planning done as quickly as possible.″
″What? You saying you can’t duck out for even an hour to do the liaison thing?″
″Normally it wouldn’t be a problem, but the Inspector has been terribly persnickety this morning.″
″Well, whatever that means, that’s her problem.″ Ray leaned in and spoke into the phone more earnestly. ″I really need you on this, Fraser.″
His partner didn’t hesitate. ″Then make haste. I’ll be ready.″
″Make haste? What century are we in again?″
″Ray...″
″Never mind. I’m on my way.″
″I’m sure I can persuade Inspector that my presence is vital to your well-being. I’ll be here and at your service, Ray.″
And Ray knew he always would be. When he called, Fraser always answered.
